It is pleasant not to be despised in one’s own country.
- French writer Voltaire after the success of his play Zaïre

Source: Voltaire by Ian Davidson, p.85

But what is our country?

India? America?

Both? Neither?

Who can tell where the loyalties of a wanderer’s heart lie?

Not even the wanderer.

Now is the time for all desi cheapskates that scoffed at the iPad (because you didn’t want to fork out $499 for a fine device) to pick up the good-for-nothing HP TouchPad for $99.

Here’s the list of U.S. stores peddling the TouchPad for $99.

You can’t do much with the TouchPad but, hey, it’s $99.

And as we all know, if Indians love anything they love cheap trash above all.

You should be able to browse the Internet and play with the few applications available for the TouchPad. But don’t expect any updates for the apps.

Just in case you were hiding under some rock, HP killed its TouchPad last week and is now working to get rid of the huge pile of unsold devices.

We haven’t stopped laughing over Samsung’s plight.

Against the almighty power and popularity of Apple’s iPad, Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 10.1-inch tablet has no hope in hell.

Yes, no hope even after $100 or more in discounts.

Now, in what seems like a desperate effort to get the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 off the shelves it will be offered gratis aka pukkat to buyers of Samsung 46″ Class LED 1080p Smart 3D HDTV or a 55″ Samsung TV with a 3D Starter Kit at Best Buy in a limited time promotion.

The free Samsung tablet promotion runs from August 21-27.

Free Samsung Tablets for Samsung TV Buyers  Samsung Galaxy 10.1 - Hard Times

Samsung has stopped releasing shipment figures for its Galaxy Tab.

But given the discounts and strong consumer resistance to non-iPad tablets we have not the slightest doubt that the Android-based Galaxy Tab 10.1 is a market disaster.

By the way, Apple sold 9.3 million iPad in its last fiscal quarter.

No, we don’t believe this ‘free’ offer will give the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 a fillip. Au contraire, it’ll only cheapen the brand value of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. Continue reading »

Apple’s next generation tablet, the iPad 3, will start shipping in early 2012.

Rumors of the iPad 3 got a big boost with today’s report in the Wall Street Journal that Apple has already ordered display panels and chips for the device.

A key enhancement in the new iPad will be higher resolution Retina Display of 2048 by 1536 compared with 1024 by 768 in the current generation iPad 2.

The display size is expected to remain at 9.7-inch.

The iPad has been a wildly successful product for Apple.

In Apple’s last fiscal quarter alone, 9.3 million iPads were sold.

Rival tablet vendors like HP, Samsung and scores of others have been floundering despite price cuts. HP pulled the plug on its TouchPad yesterday just 49 days after launch acknowledging it had failed to win consumer acceptance.

Be warned though that the iPad is a highly addictive device that will lure you away from your PC, TV and, yes, p*ssy too. ;)

You can watch live Indian TV channels screeching about Anna Hazare, delight in Shammi Kapoor prancing around in his inimitable style on YouTube on the iPad or catch a Netflix movie.

What makes HP TouchPad a compelling alternative to competing products is webOS.

- Jon Rubinstein, senior vice president and general manager, Palm Global Business Unit, HP (June 9, 2011

On August 18, HP killed the webOS-based TouchPad after a horrible market reception to the tablet.

A bleeding, beaten, crushed HP today waved the white flag at Apple today, abandoning its fledgling moves into the tablet market.

Folks, if we’ve said it once, we’ve said it a million times.

There is only one tablet that matters – Apple iPad.

And smart, thinking people including yours truly are buying only the iPad.

The rest is junk and struggling to survive despite hefty discounts.

Today, HP pulled the plug on the TouchPad tablet less than two months after it launched.

HP started selling the TouchPad July 1 in the U.S. and soon after in Europe and Canada.

By all accounts, the TouchPad met with an unenthusiastic reception from consumers despite a price cut of $100.

The 16GB TouchPad, which debuted at $499, has no takers today for $399 or less.

There are few applications for the TouchPad compared to over 90,000 dedicated apps for the iPad (in addition, several hundred thousand iPhone apps also work on the iPad). Continue reading »
