Quote of the Day – Aravind Adiga

Servants need to abuse other servants. It’s been bred into us, the way Alsatian dogs are bred to attack strangers. We attack anyone who’s familiar.

From Booker Prize Winner Aravind Adiga’s book The White Tiger, P.109

We’ve read The White Tiger. As we said last month, the book is alright but nothing extraordinary.

Looks like the non-indian critics liked it (“A+” from USA Today and Sunday times and “A” from various others).. but the indian critics seem to think that his(educated in Columbia and Oxford) portrayal of the poor in India is superficial??

I bought the Arundhati Roy book.. but never read it, thanks to my short attention span. So not planning to buy any more.

Which award covers works of fiction from all the nations (instead of just the commonwealth nations or America)?

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

    1. Jhumpa Lahiri’s collection of short stories as well as her one novel (The Namesake) are far superior to Aravind Adiga’s writing.

We purchased Aravind Adiga’s The White Tiger based on glowing reviews but did not find it worthy of the reviews.

    2. You write above: Which award covers works of fiction from all the nations (instead of just the commonwealth nations or America)?

    Nobel Prize in Literature

Nobel Prize is not limited to just fiction, right? And it seems like kind of a life achievement award in many cases..

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

Since Winston Churchill (almost all of his work was non-fiction with one exception) won the Nobel Prize in the post WW II years “for his mastery of historical and biographical description as well as for brilliant oratory in defending exalted human values”, we have to believe the prize is not restricted to fiction.

However, many of the noted writers who have won the prize (like Gabriel Garcia Marquez) have been masters of fiction.
