Rajiv Mathur is New IB Chief

The Government of India has named Rajiv Mathur the next Director of the Intelligence Bureau, the country’s inept domestic intelligence agency.

Mathur, a 1972 batch IPS officer from the Uttar Pradesh cadre, is currently Special Director of the Intelligence Bureau.

Mathur, a native of Agra, will replace P.C. Haldar on his retirement on December 31.

Under Haldar’s watch, Mumbai, Delhi, Jaipur, Ahmedabad and other Indian cities have been the sites of horrendous terrorist attacks with Indian security forces invariably being in reactive mode.

The incompetent Haldar is scheduled to retire on January 1, 2009.

Mathru has been appointed as OSD (Office on Special Duty) in the Intelligence Bureau with immediate effect.

from what I hear and read,it wasn’t an intelligence lapse that resulted in 26/11….IB and RAW had sounded alerts of an attack on mumbai coastline as early as in 2007,confirmed the alert in oct. 2008….even the US intelligence had given warning twice…..its the security forces and authorities in-charge of domestic security who messed up….

    1. Given the numerous attacks (on different cities in India) over the last two years, we’ve a hard time accepting the argument that our intelligence services are that efficient.

We’ve read reports recently that morale at both IB and RAW is low for various reasons (RAS vs IPS officers infightng at RAW, nepotism et al).

    2. You write: its the security forces and authorities in-charge of domestic security who messed up….

    And who would that be?

I am not saying our intelligence is very efficient…only that in the mumbai terror attack case, they did have prior info…..by the security forces i mean
    1) A.N. ROY(who had intel reports abt a terror attack on 5-star hotels via sea route, on his table for months and did nothing abt it)
    2) NAVY(which claims it remained clueless abt the intel reports which suggested an attack via sea route)

    What a shame.

if reports about morale , nepotism are true then yes ..it calls for revamp of the entire system …

But the moot point here is not failure of Intelligence Agencies which lead to these blasts …..But lack of Political will ….which refuse to act on Intelligence …..which refused permission to arrest muslims …refused to allow police to carry out combing operations in those areas ….. The Entire Govt …including PM, Sonia etc are responsible ….at the end of the day …it’s they who take such crucial decisions ….rest all are scapegoats ….cosmetic exercise to show that they are changing things ….

    Hope it works
