Watching Cidade de Deus

We just returned from Blockbuster after picking up Cidade de Deus, a Portuguese film set in the slums of Brazil.

Some readers of the SearchIndia.com blog – praneix, karthik15981 and Sanewar among others – have heaped so much praise on Cidade de Deus (and claimed it’s superior to Slumdog Millionaire) that we felt compelled to see if they are high on Snow White.

Directed by Fernando Meirelles and Kátia Lund, Cidade de Deus was released in 2002.

The movie features Alexandre Rodrigues, Leandro Firmino da Hora, Jonathan Haagensen, Douglas Silva and Seu Jor.

According to Wiki, Cidade de Deus received four Academy Award nominations in 2004: Best Cinematography (César Charlone), Best Directing (Meirelles), Best Editing (Daniel Rezende) and Best Writing (Adapted Screenplay, Bráulio Mantovani).

If Cidade de Deus doesn’t live up to our expectation, we are going to ask praneix, karthik15981 and Sanewar to reimburse us our Blockbuster fee of $2.49.

    LOL 😀

By the way, did luck by chance release in the US? It’s getting fine response here 😀 Please do review if possible. Or are you stuck to craps alone?

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

Yes, Luck by Chance has released widely in the U.S. (Victory has not had a wide release here).

We skipped Luck by Chance (for no reason). Instead, we went to Blockbuster yesterday and borrowed Cidade de Deus.

Now that all the reviews are out for Luck by Chance, we are reluctant to see it in the near future. But we’ll see it eventually.

    Was it worth it?

Please see Cidade de Deus vs Slumdog Millionaire.

Cidade de Deus is one of the outstanding movies I have ever seen. The violence shown in movie is very real and the movie will make you feel like you are also walking in the streets of Brazilian slum and experiencing everything happening there. I heard that most of the actors are debutants and what an acting – our ajiths, vijays, abisheks et al should go and take acting lessons from them.

Between, Pudhupettai (Dhanush movie) is very much inspired from this movie. Have you guys watched this movie. The violence in this movie is also very raw and the story of this movie follows very much like city of god.

You write above: I heard that most of the actors are debutants and what an acting – our ajiths, vijays, abisheks et al should go and take acting lessons from them.

    1. Yes, we too remember something along those lines, perhaps in Wiki.

Compared to the youngsters in Cidade de Deus, Ajith, Vijay and Abhishek Bachchan are podi pasanga (kids), who would be the butt of ridicule outside the borders of india.

    2. No, we have not seen Pudhupettai.

The Dhanush films we’ve seen are Yaaradi Nee Mohini, Parattai Engira Azhagu Sundaram and Thiruvilayadal.
