Apple App Store Juggernaut Rolls On

The Apple digital media juggernaut shows no sign of slowing.

On the first anniversary of the rollout of its digital media application repository App Store, Apple said customers had downloaded over 1.5 billion applications from the store. The applications run on Apple’s popular iPhone and iPod devices.

Apple did not say whether the downloads were for free apps or paid apps.

We believe majority of the downloads from the App Store are for free applications. The applications cover a whole gamut from games to entertainment to utilities to finance to sports to travel.

Apple App Store

Apple’s CEO Steve Jobs boasted:

The App Store is like nothing the industry has ever seen before in both scale and quality. With 1.5 billion apps downloaded, it is going to be very hard for others to catch up.

App Store offers some 65,000 apps that run on the iPod touch and iPhone devices.

Apple has sold 40 million of the iPod touch and iPhone devices that can run apps from the App Store and has 100,000 developers participating in its iPhone Developer Program.

Wow.. Number of applications almost got doubled at every interval, and reached a whopping 65000!!

Even if we download one app per hour and try out, it will take almost 7 years to finish everything [provided that the count does not increase, and we do not sleep all these years]..

    😐

    1. You write: Even if we download one app per hour and try out, it will take almost 7 years to finish everything [provided that the count does not increase, and we do not sleep all these years]..

Wonder how many of these applications are used intensively.

We use a bunch of apps like AOL Radio (to listen to Bollywood classics from Radio NRI), NYT, AP (news), WSJ, QuickVoice (for short memos), Bloomberg, Weather Channel et al.

    2. Unless Apple makes a big stumble, we doubt Google Android or Sprint Pre have any chance. Developers have little incentive to write for other mobile platform given the enormous popularity of the iPod touch and iPhone.

The apps on the App store are awesome.. They have an app for literally everything… I have 6 pages of apps installed on my iPhone 3G.. The games are wonderful too.. I have played Wolf 3D on iPhone, The experience was similar to what I had 10 years ago when I played the same game on a PC…

How many paid apps have you purchased so far?

In the last 13 months, we’ve got only two paid apps: India News and Panchang.

Except for these two, all our iPhone apps are free apps. Wonder how the developers make money.

Did you know that even the WSJ is free on iPhone?
