WTF Happened to Aayirathil Oruvan on East Coast?

Who is the culprit?

Folks, Aayirathil Oruvan was supposed to debut on the East Coast today.

But now it’s completely disappeared from the showtimes for MovieShitty and some other theatres that we frequent.

Wonder what happened.

DidΒ  the prints not arrive here on time?

dunno, but its showing in the UK from today, no problems over here (gonna watch it tomorrow)…
reviews are pretty mixed though, saying that the first half is wonderful, while the 2nd half drags…and the good things about the movie is the music by GV Prakash (A.R.Rahman’s nephew) and Karthi’s performance.
btw, has Paruthiveeran or Pithamagan made it on to netflix yet?
god, you HAVE to watch Pithamagan…just watch this song:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sfvMM8tGaaw
this is NOT your typical run-of-the-mill story. and everyone acted amazing (as in everyone including all the extras, ie Karunas, Manobala)

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

    1. Most likely the prints failed to make it or got stuck at U.S. Customs. Going by the reviews, we’d say we were lucky.

    2. No, Paruthiveeran and Pithamagan have not made it to Netflix.

    3. The video/song was nice.

Looks like Movie Shitty moved it tomorrow:

    http://movies.yahoo.com/showtimes-tickets/theaters/9060-big-cinemas-movie-city-8/

Heard that the first half is bearable and second is a nightmare. May be you can skip it. That is unless your interest is in watching a half-naked Reema Sen.

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

    1. You write: Looks like Movie Shitty moved it tomorrow:

Yes, but (un)fortunately we have some other work tomorrow.

We’ve never seen this kind of nonsense with Bollywood films…only with Tamil movies. πŸ™

    2. You write: May be you can skip it. That is unless your interest is in watching a half-naked Reema Sen.

Much as we’d love to see a half-naked Reema or better still a sky-clad Reema Sen we’re going to have to skip it because of a prior commitment tomorrow.

AO is not bad…the reviewer is native of an assyum..when a reviewer can give 2.5 stars for ATM, it means he cannot appreciate any good effort..never mind this review and watch this movie in theatres..u wont complain much,

@SI: you have spent your hard earned money and time on watching villu (lol), kandasamy, a chain of Akshaykumar and abhisek films…so pls dont think you are saving those $$ because the reviews are n’t good..you have already lost enough of them..so PLS GO FOR IT..u wont regret this time

This is crappiest Piece of Shit I’ve watched in my entire life, I so want my Money back.

Plz js don’t bother wasting your money on this dumb arse movie. This was even worse than Villu.

Selvaraghavan spells disaster, it was so crude and had loads of insinuating remarks and has the most asinine story, don’t let me go to the acting part. It was like watching a porn movie with bad actors. Reema Sen flew right from her crazy Vallavan monkey act, Andrea needs to go back to acting school and Karthi was reincarnated from his ParuthiVeeran days.

This is the Lollu sabha of Scary Movies. I’m showing my middle finger.

Hard to conceive of something in life worse than Villu.

If someone says AO is bad, they need brain transplant. I found it brilliant. First half is mindblowing while second half is tormenting, probably because of Sangam Tamil and unwanted holocaust.

      SearchIndia.com Responds:

English subtitles would have helped for the Sangam Tamil (at least in the cities…not sure how far English has penetrated into the rural parts of Tamil Nadu). Some SI readers say plans to add subtitles are afoot….probably a little late.

  6. SRINIVAS   January 17, 2010 at 2:08 am

first half is good ….second half is full of sangam tamil ….which nobody is able to follow ……vulgarity could have been avoided ….overall u can watch it once …..

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

You write: second half is full of sangam tamil

Did they have English subtitles for this Sangam (old) Tamil?

    • shadowfax_arbit   January 18, 2010 at 12:16 am

      >> Did they have English subtitles for this Sangam (old) Tamil?

LOL No. They are planning to have Tamil subtitles for the Sangam Tamil.

      Btw, can you read Tamil?

      SearchIndia.com Responds:

You write: Btw, can you read Tamil?

Ha ha ha. You keep raising this completely irrelevant question again and again.

Kanna (kiddo), we are Tamil Pulavars (scholars) here.

  7. SRINIVAS   January 17, 2010 at 4:31 am

no ….but i read that they are planning to have it …..they have also cut around 20 to 26 minutes in the second half …..it showed on the screen when some scenes ended abruptly …….visuals are very good …..especially in the first half …..

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

    1. Thanks..in any case the subtitles are unlikely to come here anytime soon if the problems they had with the print is any indication.

    2. You write: visuals are very good .

Some of the reviewers have commented on the graphics being not good. For instance, see this excerpt from the BW review:

The underdeveloped script lacks everything – starting from strong plot twists to captive locations to graphics to credibility, above all.

  8. pauldeleo   January 17, 2010 at 12:37 pm

sad to see that, half of the commenters had not even watched the movie and they talk bad about it.i watched it an hour back and i am awestuck by the visuals and imagination of the creator.I dont recommend this film to everyone, because it only suits certain viewers who has a different mindset. everyone said that the first half is a fun ride and second half is dragging..but second half has more emotions and exhibits the miserable life of the almost extinct chola dynasty(according to the director’s imagination-remember this is a fantasy movie and a not a historical movie).this movie is a must watch for all who wants to take a break from the regular formulaic (tamil)cinema. on my words this movie is EXCELLENT (there are a few avoidable scenes, but selva is known for those thoughts).

@ SI: i would say you take a call on it and watch it..there are some never seen visuals in indian cinema
someone said its worser than villu..there is nothing worse one can expect after watching villu..he lives the saying-Arandavan kannuku irundadhellam paeyi (for the scared soal, darkness too,is a ghost. i feel pity on you.

Many people talk about the script..for their info, the genre of the movie is different and people who comment on the script should stop mentioning it. this is a movie which demands visuals and not dialogue or script. The second half demands such a narration and you cant call it dragging..but the sangam Tamil could be avoided as its difficult to comprehend even for a native speaker(they are now planning to add subtitles for that part).
There are quite a few dark spots, but one should learn to enjoy the vast white area surrounding it.

Regarding the graphics, one cannot expect more after watching avatar..but this can atleast be credited as a shadow of avatar, given the budget and technicians involved.

Its overall a brave attempt in an otherwise posessed Indian Cinema..let’s appreciate the effort

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

You write: @ SI: i would say you take a call on it and watch it..there are some never seen visuals in indian cinema

    Parkalam (we’ll see).

@ BW Excerpt: The underdeveloped script lacks everything – starting from strong plot twists to captive locations to graphics to credibility, above all.

plot twists is defn there in the second half …..which u would not be able to guess till then ….and a good one ….

captive locations ……its a adventure movie ….there are far too many captive locations and very good ones ….

graphics ….yes ….but there is very little graphics in the movie ………….most of it is real …

credibility …..dont know what that means in this context ….i guess the reviewer might have just used this adjective …in a flow …

Overall its different …..i personally liked it …

@ BW Review: “The underdeveloped script lacks everything – starting from strong plot twists to captive locations to graphics to credibility, above all.”

This is surprising. Barring the one in water I found the visuals were really good, given the budget constraints. The reviewer probably wanted something like in Avatar. Even locations and twists were good, as mentioned in the comment above. There are hardly any dialogues in second half with too much vulgarity and unwanted scenes. Some scenes were inspired from Gladiator, 300 and Cannibal Holocaust. However it would create an impact for sure. BGM could have been better.

Overall the movie was really good – never seen before in Tamil cinema. Some scenes were simply too good. All lead actors have performed well. Worth a watch.

Cannibal Holocaust is available on netflix.. will watch it soon. The BW review says “zombies”.. are there “zombies” or cannibals?.. if the reviewer doesn’t know the difference between zombies and cannibals, she isn’t fit to review movies of this genre.. why the f*ck is she talking about Erum Ali.. baffling!

one reviewer hates the movie because it portrays Tamils as cannibals.. funny..

Sangam Tamil – looks like Selva may have been inspired by Mel Gibson’s Apocalypto etc. where he uses Mayan, Aramaic etc. languages.

I am thinking that the movie has to be watched atleast once for curiosity’s sake.. just like Dasavatharam.. shadow/paul/racer.. is this better than Dasavatharam?

  11. racer44   January 18, 2010 at 6:31 am

    AO is really good.

Despite poor graphics(going by international standards, but then our directors lack such strong financial backing; but I assure you, they don’t mar the viewing experience significantly) and a somewhat silly build-up to the climax, aayirathil oruvan has treaded uncharted territory (in indian film industry) and done so successfully. For that reason alone, this film deserves a watch.

As you like to say frequently, this is not a non-pareil film or a ne plus ultra film or any other fancy-sounding latin phrases. But still, it’s not the (again, as you like to say) usual crap (or kuppa or garbage) that tamil film industry churns out periodically. A master-piece, surely not, but it does hold out a promise of better films in this genre.

Please do spare the time to watch it. (Especially since you have missed eeram, nadodigal, pasanga and another half-dozen decent films last year). Sincerely hope it will stop you cribbing about state of tamil film industry after seeing only stuff like villu.

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

You write: A master-piece, surely not, but it does hold out a promise of better films in this genre. Please do spare the time to watch it.

Given the high praise from you, shadow fax et al, we’ll consider watching it.

Some of the films you mention in your second last sentence did not release here.

  12. pauldeleo   January 18, 2010 at 8:35 am

WOW.watched it for the second time..could n’t resist myself…going by the bad taste of general audience, i felt this movie might have to take an early call…so i watched again before its too late..but a positive word of mouth is spreading and i could see repeated audience

if you are watching this movie..keep only this is in mind(if sub-titles are not provided)when u watch the second half:
“its karthi, the messenger for chola dynasty but reema deceives parthiban and make him submit, despite parthiban referring to the olden paintings and doubting her identity”
and if you are a real pulavar(poet), you will then understand the sangam tamil..

many reviewers question about the raw life style of the cholas in the movie..acc to the director, they escaped frm pandiyas and camouflaged in an unknown place where there is no rain, cultivaton or farming, which gradually made them raw both in appearance and food habits. I wish the reviewers had some time to think before they wrote. They only target whose review is first on net rather considering which is best on net.

if movies of this kind or not supported and encouraged, we would only see sack of gross like villu,vettaikaran,kandasamy,adhavan…n+1

@ all who watched the movie: except for a few obscenity(2%), do you agree that the rest of the movie(98%) is an all time different attempt in Indian Cinema??

@SI: make hay while the sun (rarely)shines(in Indian cinema)-pls go for it!!

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

    1. As we’ve said in response to an earlier comment, we’ll consider seeing it.

    2. You write: if you are a real pulavar(poet), you will then understand the sangam tamil..

BTW, did we say pulavar or po*lavar? Can’t remember. πŸ˜‰

pauldeleo – try not to reveal the story completely ….especially those imp story twists and turns …..

Selva should have avoided obscenity ……that in many a places actually…..drives your attention away from the main plot …..

Dont know what portions he trimmed ……the movie actually moves at a very brisk pace till the interval …..

Yuvan Shankar Raja’s absence was felt ……..Un Mela Asai Thaan is a Yuvan number which he had composed and was also shot before he parted ways with Selva ……then Yuvan used that tune in Sarvam …. …so Selva asked GV Prakash to slightly modify the tune …..since he had already picturised the song ….

Well, are you going to watch the film or is it going to be business as usual: selectively picking out tamil films you already know you’re gonna hate and then returning home satisfied that you had been right all along? And this time you don’t even have the lame excuse that the film didn’t release in the east coast. A simple google search reveals this much:
    http://www.nowrunning.com/usa/new-jersey/nj/showtimes.htm

Why is it that you have adopted a policy of skipping the good ones, seeing only the bad ones, and then whining that all tamil films are rotten?

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

    1. You write: Well, are you going to watch the film

Kiddo, we did plan to watch AO. But then the monkeys changed the showtimes. Repeatedly.

    Not our fault.

We don’t know about you but we have busy schedules that requires coordination with other things too. πŸ™

    2. You write: Why is it that you have adopted a policy of skipping the good ones,

Since when did you get the mantle of deciding which ones are good.

All that said, we will watch Ayirathil Oruvan.

Let whatever buzz there is die down. πŸ˜‰

  17. racer44   January 20, 2010 at 10:42 am

“Let whatever buzz there is die down.”

That might take a long time. And btw, having said that you’d watch it, I would also be glad if you would watch it in a theatre sometime soon and not wait till everyone has forgotten about the movie and then quietly rent it on netflix or some similar website. You see, I am worried about AO being left to hang around in the same sort of limbo that you have consigned DevD to.

So don’t wait too long you know. Praise it, or (more likely from you) damn it, just get it over with soon. I am interested to see your take on it.

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

    Seriously, we will.

Right now, we’re writing a short post on Aayirathil Oruvan. Will publish in a few minutes (latest by 11:15AM Eastern Time).

  18. sanewar   January 20, 2010 at 11:48 am

saw AO yesterday, i think this movie gives you a hint of what u can expect from tamil cinema near future, more adventure fantasy films.

I have to appreciate selvaraghavan just for daring to make a movie on cholas as cannibals and not copying any foreign language film scenes (some scenes look like inspirations, but nothing is copy as far as i know).

But leaving aside that it is a totally different theme for a tamil movie, it is ordinary. Screenplay has lot of loose ends, too much gore for a tamil cinema, needless holocaust in climax and lifeless acting.

well, SI , you are going to use atleast 1500 words bashing this movie.
