Server revenues fell 5.2% year-over-year to $12.6 billion in the third quarter as technology spending slowed around the world, according to market researcher IDC.

The third quarter server revenue decline is estimated to be the largest quarterly revenue decline since Q4 of 2002.

Although server unit shipments grew 2.8% year-over-year, it was the slowest increase in server shipments since the fourth quarter of 2006.

Among the major server vendors, Sun, now in a downward death spiral, showed the sharpest decline with its server revenues down nearly 11% to $1.19 billion.

HP and IBM ended the third quarter in a statistical tie with 30.7% and 30.2% overall market share respectively.

Why is Internet penetration in India so low?

With 81 million Internet users, India accounts for a mere 6% of the 1.348 billion netizens in the world.

There were only 13.5 million Internet subscribers in India in 2007 (1.15 per 100 inhabitants), according to the Internet Governance Forum. This means each Internet connection is shared by six users.

India’s low Internet usage suggests that the net has still not become the pervasive tool it has in countries like the U.S.

What’s holding up Internet penetration/usage in India?

* Is pricing the major culprit?

* Are Indian ISPs ripping off customers?

* Are cybercafes still very popular (we remember reading that many have shut down)?

* Is the Indian government doing anything at all to boost Internet usage?

U.S. Scenario
In the U.S., you can get unlimited dial-up for about $15/month from companies like NetZero. You can get the faster DSL from Verizon for $20. Of course, cable (Comcast) or fibre optic (Verizon) Internet access is faster but also more expensive. They cost around $33 per month under a bundle plan.

Broadband
The Internet access picture in India is bleaker on the broadband front.

According to the Internet Governance Forum, India has just 3 million Continue reading »

Moviegoers Dump on Yuvvraaj – Box Office Disaster

Bollywood’s latest mega crapshow Yuvvraaj has crashed at the U.S. box office in its second weekend.

For the weekend of November 28-30, Yuvvraaj grossed a mere $158,433.

The Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif, Anil Kapoor and Zayed Khan starrer Yuvvraaj came in at No-27 with an average gross of $2,058.

Since Yuvvraaj had a lousy first weekend too at the U.S. box office, a 40% crash in the second weekend does not augur well.

Here’s a look at how Yuvvraaj has fared compared to some prominent Bollywood films in the second weekend at the U.S. box office:

Given the miserable box office performance of Salman Khan’s movies Continue reading »

We have always said that Indians are the most hypocritical swines on the planet bar none.

Whether it comes to money, God, minorities or women, what Indians say and what Indians do are two totally different things.

Take Rape for instance.

Indian mythology and culture talk of women’s exalted status in society. But the reality is a completely different animal.

Throughout much of Indian history, at every stage of a woman’s life she’s been ill-treated – often made to work like a farm animal, tortured for not bringing enough dowry, abused constantly, subjected to biased treatment compared to her male siblings, occasionaly burnt alive and frequently the target of rape.

The latest report of the Delhi-based National Crime Records Bureau shows India’s shameful record when it comes to rape.

In 2007, there were 20,737 reported cases of rape. This works out to a horrific 2.37 rapes every hour.

As you read this piece, some unfortunate girl, woman or child is likely being raped in India.

Since 1971, the incidence of rape in India has increased by a whopping 734%.

Yes, that’s  734%. No typo here. (Source: National Crime Records Bureau)

Given the social stigma attached to the victims of the crime rather than the perpetrators and the bias of the Indian police and society against women, we believe the real incidence of rape in India could be 20 times as high as the reported figures because many women do not come forward to report their rapes or are shoved aside by the legal system.

So the real rape figures for India could be as high as 400,000.

The majority of rape cases reported were for women in the 18-30 age Continue reading »

Our dodo-in-chief a.k.a. commander-in-chief and President Bush has dispatched that inept Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice to India in the wake of the Mumbai terrorist attacks.

What for?

Apparently, Rice (who once referred to her dodo-in-chief Bush as my husband) is visiting Indiato express the condolences of the American government directly to the Indian government and the Indian people.’

Ha, ha ha. That’s baloney.

Rice is in India because she and her DIC (dodo-in-chief) think that if India attacks Pakistan, it’ll screw up American interests in Pakistan because the Pakis will immediately withdraw their troops from the Afghanistan border to the eastern front with India.

And if that happens, it’ll be a field day for those bearded Taliban crackpots and make life really miserable for the Americans, who have already been Continue reading »
