Indian movies are like buying a lottery ticket – 99.99999% of the time you lose.

It’s the second weekend that tells the whole story. Like compare Singh is kinng and ghajini. Ghajini opened with around 767000 whereas Sik opened with around 1.15 million. Ghajini grossed way higher than sik overall. Here is the top 10 highest grossing Indian movies in US:
    1)om shanti om
    2)jodha Akbar
    3)kabhi alvida na kehna
    4)veer zaara
    5)devdas
    6)dhoom2
    7)ghajini
    8)don
    9)lage raho munna bhai
    10) Rang de basanti

so let’s see how high love aaj kal grosses.

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

    1. You write: Ghajini opened with around 767000 whereas Sik opened with around 1.15 million

    Factually right but methodologically wrong.

Not a valid comparison because Ghajini opened on Dec 24 and did $620,675 on Dec 24 & Dec 25 alone and another $766,859 over the next three days.

    2. Except Veer Zaara and Devdas, we’ve seen all the movies in your above list.

Dhoom 2 (may dislike even this one if we were to watch it today) was slick but the rest were junk.

One of these days we’ll make a table (like you’ve done above) and include the total U.S. box office numbers alongside.

For those who are curious, that piece of trash Om Shanti Om did $3.597 million total in the U.S.

  8. Malika S   August 6, 2009 at 10:11 pm

Well I still disagree with your methodological point but you can take other movies as an example if you aren’t satisfied with ghajini and sik comparison such as veerzaara vs sik or dhoom2 vs sik opening etc… Rest dhoom2 was plain junk my friend. There was nothing slick about the movie. Definitely all the top 10 are plain piece of shit movies.

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

And to think these 10 flicks are the ‘big’ movies from Bollywood.

No surprise that no one takes Bollywood seriously outside of India and the diaspora.

I went and saw Love Aaj Kal today. It wasn’t half bad. Still some holes here and there in the organization, plot, music and acting (no I’m not being facetious and yes I know you’re going to say well that’s basically the entire composition of the movie), but overall better than anything I’ve seen since Fanaa and that was 3 years ago. Still, not even close to Fanaa, but I wasn’t disappointed and wouldn’t ask for my money back. This was a step in the right direction, especially for Deepika, after the horror show that was Chandni Chowk to China.

I’d disagree with Malika S on Veer-Zaara. Devdas was crap, but Veer-Zaara is one of the best Bollywood movies I’ve seen. The music/sound track is one of the best I’ve heard as well. I don’t think there’s a single bad song on there.

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

With so much noise about Love Aaj Kal, we just might, might see it this weekend.
