Hey, which bi*ch was it that slammed Aayirathil Oruvan as a bad movie?

Shut up you bi*ch, otherwise we’ll blow your f*cking brains off!

Yeah, right. ;)

Indiana Jones, Redux
Folks, notwithstanding the bibulous babble of the ignorati or the drivel pouring forth from the schmucks, Aayirathil Oruvan is easily one of the most attractive Tamil movies to emerge from the Augean stables of Kollywood in the last couple of years.

Eschewing the familiar claptrap of asinine romances or sophomoric ‘action’ movies (usually featuring buffoons like Surya, Vijay, Vikram or Ajith), Aayirathil Oruvan trots down a different path.

The lavish harvest of a powerful imagination, Aayirathil Oruvan dares to venture into a terrain, a virgin adventure trail, where few Indian movies, be it Kollywood or its older sibling Bollywood, have explored with any credibility before.

Visually pleasing, featuring solid acting and fast-paced for the most part, Aayirathil Oruvan is a rara avis in Tamil films.

Folks, it’s Indiana Jones redux.

Albeit, a scaled down, Tamil version of a lush jungle where you come face to face with weird-looking cannibals, venomous snakes slithering around you and on you too, deceptive quicksand, hostile primitives and other dangerous elements lurking about on the road to discovering the relics of a lost empire’s refugees.

Drawing its inspiration from the ancient rivalry between the Chola and Pandya kings of Tamil lore but rooted firmly in the present times, the film gallops along at a pretty pace in the lush jungles of Vietnam. Really? ;)

The only uneasy feeling we have is how could a jackass who wrote that garbage Yaaradi Nee Mohini also deliver Aayirathil Oruvan. Enlighten us, will ya. Continue reading »

Veer Box Office – Salman ‘Flop’ Khan Fails Again

When it comes to Bollywood star Salman Khan, the transaction course is clearly mapped out in advance – Trash for Cash.

Salman’s trash for your cash.

Trash.Guaranteed, when it comes to Salman ‘flop‘ Khan’s movies.

Trash, Redux
Folks, true to form Salman Khan delivers another dud in Veer.

What’s new, eh?

A lengthy bore, Veer is yet another Bollywood movie that ought not to have ever been made. The very idea should have been consigned to the trash-bin.

Alas, tis’ a cruel world we live in and, instead, we’re subjected to a mind-numbing 2 hours and 35-minutes of one of the dullest movies we ever watched on the big screen.

Pindaris – A Bheekari Story
Set in the late 19th century, Veer centers around the warrior clan of Pindaris who were supposedly a force to reckon with in parts of North India.

Veer (Salman Khan) is the son of a Pindari chieftain Prithvi (yesteryear disco dancer Mithun Chakravarthy), who was once treacherously deceived by the local King of Madhavgarh.

A treachery that cost the Pindaris the lives of 4,500 of their brave ones and the evil King his right arm.

And thus goes on – yawn, yawn – the revenge tale. Continue reading »

Veer Box Office – Salman ‘Flop’ Khan Fails Again

Veer Review – Trash for Cash

Folks, a new Salman Khan movie has debuted and true to form this one too is utter garbage if you go by the critics.

Here’s what a sample of critics has to say on Salman’s Veer, which released in theatres today:

NDTV:

Veer…doesn’t weave it together with enough imagination or panache. This mega-scale love story has patches of power but mostly veers between being ridiculous and plain boring.

IndiaTimes:

You have to be a braveheart to watch Veer.

India FM:

Salman Khan [who has been credited as the story writer of VEER] takes TARAS BULBA, adds GLADIATOR, CONAN THE BARBARIAN, TROY, TITANIC and even KRANTI [the end is a straight lift of Manoj Kumar's Dilip Kumar starrer] and comes up with this khichdi which gets unpalatable after a point.

Entertainment and Showbiz:

Veer has everything…high budget, big stars, good camera works, well designed costumes. But it missed the main thing…Story!

Rediff:

Salim Khan, one of our most iconic screenwriters, deserves a better tribute than son Salman, credited for the film’s story, churning out this unbelievably hackneyed period disaster.

Director Anil Sharma has never been known for his subtlety, and here, sinking his teeth into the painfully melodramatic script, he goes at it hammer and tongs, taking one megabudget misstep after another.

What should have been the occasional spice to vary the regular menu had become the main course, leaving the appetite often confused or unfulfilled.

- Rohinton Mistry in A Fine Balance. P.60

Folks, to describe A Fine Balance as a gorgeous masterpiece would be an understatement.

Yes, this is our first book by Rohinton Mistry.

And we paid all of five-cents at our local library for the castoff, worn-out, paperback copy.

No, the book was not recommended to us by anyone. As we were desultorily eying the huge pile of discards on the shelves, we stumbled upon this book.

Never has an accidental discovery been so serendipitous.

Without doubt, the best five-cents we’ve spent in our life. :)

Meaning
As for the above quote, it’d be impossible to tell y’all the context without losing the magic.

It’s about Dina and Fredoon, as those who have read the book will recollect.

Of course, the quote is about sex. ;)

While it appears humorous at first glance, there’s infinite sadness behind the statement. For Dina and her loss.

If you are curious, you can read about Rohinton Mistry on his Wiki profile here.

Aayirathil Oruvan Review – Sin Not to Watch it

Say, we have two doubts.

Help us, will ya. Please.

1. What is it that Reema Sen has that Vijay lacks?

That is other than the obvious assets. ;)

2. And do you think Karthi’s is bigger than Vijay’s?

Hey, we mean the size of the screen appeal. Not what you nasty creepos think. ;)

Folks, in a country where directors usually count for little and stars are all, how do you account for Aayirathil Oruvan’s decent opening weekend performance at the box office (UK, that is) considering Karthi and Reema Sen are lesser lights compared to Vijay.

Maybe, Aayirathil Oruvan is an exception where the director (Selvaraghavan, in this instance) mattered too.

Whether Aayirathil Oruvan is good, bad or ugly we don’t know since we have yet to watch it.

But what we do know for sure is that Aayirathil Oruvan has done better than Vijay’s Vettaikaran on the Average Gross basis in the opening weekend at the U.K. box office.

Look at the below table and the numbers speak for themselves:
