Thank God, we watched the previous Harry Potter film (Half-Blood Prince) last night on DVD and spent some time on WiKi before heading out to see Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 that released in the U.S. and India today.

For those watching the latest Harry Potter film without reading the books or seeing the previous films in the series, it’s safe to say they would feel completely lost.

Familiar Faces
For crying out loud, it’s a Harry Potter film and, of course, there are the familiar faces of Harry (Daniel Radcliffe), his friends Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint) and Hermione Granger (Emma Watson), his enemies Lord Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes), Bellatrix Lestrange (Helena Bonham Carter ) and an assorted bunch of others including Nagini, the deadly snake.

The plot, if you are curious, tasks Harry and buddies with finding the Horcruxes and, naturlich, destroying them. And the purpose of destroying the Horcruxes is to take them one step closer to destroying Lord Voldemort. Continue reading »

Whoa, who would’ve thought online retailer Amazon.com would get into the movie-making business.

The Good

Amazon.com today launched a new initiative called Amazon Studios that might help budding filmmakers and script writers break into the intensely competitive and highly lucrative world of the movie business.

Aspiring movie makers or screenwriters, of whom there’s never been a shortage in the world, can submit full length test movies or scripts to Amazon Studios.

A tart temper never mellows with age, and a sharp tongue is the only edged tool that grows keener with constant use.
Source: Rip Van Winkle by Washington Irving

Yes, yes, we know, we know all ye dickheads with your luscious lips wrapped around the dicks of Rajinikanth and the Bollywood Khans have no use for interesting quotes or fine short stories. What the hell, this is our bastion and we’ll scribble what we please and if it doesn’t please y’all you can shove it up your you-know-what.

Who amongst you lettered ones hasn’t enjoyed reading the fine tale Rip Van Winkle in your school days.

The story of the lazy man who dozed off for 20-years and woke up thinking he’d just slept overnight casts a spell over young minds and is one for the ages.

Rip, the man who “was ready to attend anybody’s business but his own” and with “an insuperable aversion to all kinds of profitable labor” was a popular fella in his village in the Kaatskill (as it was then spelled) mountains.

After all, here was a man who would “never refuse to assist a neighbor even in the roughest toil.”

The man who “would rather starve on a penny than work for a pound” is our kind of man even if he be the kind to perennially rouse the wrath of his termagant spouse!

We’d be lying if we said we remembered the author of this fine story before today.

Tis’ only after we reread the story this evening, did we realize that the author of this fabled tale is an American writer Washington Irving (1783-1859).

Two Indian firms Althea Systems and Verismo are part of a group of 18 firms that have received a total of $77 million in investment from Intel Capital, the investment arm of microprocessor giant Intel.

The investments were disclosed today at an Intel Capital conference in Huntington Beach, California.

Here are details on the two Indian fledglings that got moolah from Intel Capital:

* Althea Systems‘ cloud-based video discovery platform is said to make it easier to find and share online videos across various devices. Althea launched a PC version of Shufflr, a social video browser, with a rich, immersive video experience in July.

Shufflr’s video discovery platform on the cloud aggregates video from several sources and combines machine aided and social discovery engines to help users find video they like. Shufflr is to be available soon on smartphones, tablets and TVs, providing continuity of video experience from one device to another.

Intel Capital’s investment will help Bangalore-based Althea expand its development team and marketing efforts. Continue reading »

Three U.S. mobile carriers AT&T Mobility, T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless have set up a joint venture to build a smartphone-based mobile payment network called ISIS.

This means that if ISIS succeeds instead of those pesky credit cards or $ bills that many of us seem to be forever losing we’ll all be tapping on our iPhone, Android or wateva smartphone at the point of sale to make grocery and other purchases at Patel Brothers, Apna Bazaar, Walmart or Subzi Mandi in the U.S.

Not just payments, the contactless ISIS technology is supposed to make the mobile phone the repository of coupons, transit passes, tickets and the like.

We are suckers for deals and promotions.

This evening we were prowling the aisles of our local Food Lion grocery store in a mid-Atlantic state in the U.S. when our eyes fell on a sign advertising a promotion – Two Tasty Bite heat-and-eat curry packets for $5 (regular price $2.99 each).

Pronto, we purchased two Tasty Bite packets (of different flavors): Jaipur Vegetables and Punjabi Eggplant.

Two green chillies were prominently positioned in the picture on the packet (see above) and the bottom had the slogan SPICE IT UP suggesting in all a spicy delight. Continue reading »
