For anyone who’s lived in Tamil Nadu in the 1970s, K.J.Yesudas’ Deivam Thantha Veedu must surely rank as the Keralite singer’s greatest song ever.

There was no way you could miss the song for it was constantly blaring forth from some loudspeaker (public address system) or the other.

The lovely song is from Tamil director K.Balachandar’s famous film Aval Oru Thodar Kathai (Kamal Haasan, Phataphat Jayalaxmi, Jaiganesh, Sujatha, Sripriya).

If you understand Tamil, you’ll realize the song has profound meaning!

A haunting melody, the song penetrates to the core of the soul.

The Telugu version of the song is Devude Ichchaadu Veedhi Okati and the film is Anthuleni Katha (Rajinikanth, Jaya Prada).

No, we haven’t watched the Tamil film although we’ve heard so much of it.

We’re completely sloshed right now on a surfeit of Gilbey’s Gin and Ginger Ale but if we recollect right, there used to be even a Yesudas commercial based on the song.

Was it Vicks Action 500?

Another nice song from the same film is Adi Ennadi Ulagam by L.R.Eswari.

A peppy number for the 1970s, Adi Ennadi Ulagam was way ahead of its times

A lovely song interspersed with the ejaculation ‘Phataphat” (another of life’s tragedies involving the famous Tamil actress)!

Those who’re familiar with L.R.Eswari know that she used to specialize in these ‘fast’ songs.

Another easily recognizable song from the film is Kadavul Amaithu Vaitha.

This song too used to be blasted from loudspeakers in Tamil Nadu all the time in  the ’70s.

Now, if you schmucks are curious, our other favorite Yesudas song is Meenkodi Theril Manmatha Rajan from the movie Karumbu Vil. We purchased this song from Apple iTunes and listen to it all the time.

Like all of the non-iPad tablets (except perhaps Amazon’s Kindle Fire), Toshiba’s 10.1-inch Thrive too has turned out to be a dud.

In November, Toshiba Thrive tablets were on Groupon for $299 (a hefty $100 discount for the 16GB version), making it $200 cheaper than the entry-level 16GB iPad 2.

Ha ha ha!

Now, don’t tell us you’d sell your Tablets on Groupon if you’re selling well in the marketplace! ;)

The Thrive has USB and HDMI ports and even a SD card slots but prone to crashing, comes with crapware and low battery life.

And nobody gives a damn for the Toshiba Thrive.

We’ve played with the Thrive at one of the H.H.Gregg stores and didn’t get an orgasm.

Toshiba Excite x10 TabletToshiba to Bring Excite X10 to U.S.

Toshiba Plays the Excite Game

Large corporations are like human beings.

Stupid as hell!

After all, what are corporations but agglomerations of humans.

Despite a poor showing and having little chance with another tablet, Toshiba is throwing its hats into the Tablet ring yet again with the Excite X10 tablet.

This time at a higher price point than the wonderful, nonpareil iPad.

Touting it as the world’s thinnest tablet at 0.3 inches (7.7mm), Toshiba plans to introduce the Excite X10 in the U.S. this quarter at a starting price of $529 (16GB version), higher than a comparable iPad 2 by $30.

If that’s not a recipe for disaster, we don’t know what is.

Nobody, nobody gives a flying f*ck for the “thinnest tablet” in the world.

Consumers want a tablet that works well, has buzz, comes with a solid ecosystem of applications and oozes sex appeal.

And the iPad 2 has all of them!

Consumers are not driven by price alone.

Now for all the impatient ‘uns, here are the specifications for the Toshiba Excite X10:

Specifications

  • Latest Android software
  • 10.1-inch diagonal LED Backlit widescreen Corning Gorilla Glass display with IPS technology and 10-finger multi-touch support
  • 1280 x 800 resolution, 16:10 aspect ratio
  • Texas Instruments OMAP 4430 processor; 1.2GHz with 1GB LPDDR2 RAM
  • 16GB and 32GB configurations
  • 2 megapixel front-facing camera
  • 5 megapixel rear-facing camera with LED flash
  • Micro USB, Micro HDMI ports
  • Micro SD card slot
  • Wi-Fi (802.11b/g/n) and Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR
  • Gyroscope, Accelerometer, GPS, eCompass and Ambient Light Sensor
  • Stereo speakers with sound enhancements by Toshiba and SRS Labs
  • Built-in 25 watt-hour rechargeable lithium ion battery
  • 10.1” (W) x 6.9” (D) x 0.3” (H)
  • 1.18 pounds (535g)
Price Cuts Coming

We’re gonna take a bet with all ye schmucks that Toshiba will start discounting the Excite X10 before the end of the second quarter.

To compete against the iPad Tablet, rivals need a significantly lower price point (like the Kindle Fire).

By emphasizing the “thinness” and pricing its entry-level Excite X10 offering higher than the comparable iPad, Toshiba is playing the tablet game entirely the wrong way!

Five years back today, i.e. January 9, 2007, smartphone history was made with the launch of the iPhone.

Launching what subsequently became the world’s favorite smartphone at the 2007 Macworld, Apple co-founder and then CEO, the late Steve Jobs said:

iPhone is a revolutionary and magical product that is literally five years ahead of any other mobile phone. We are all born with the ultimate pointing device—our fingers—and iPhone uses them to create the most revolutionary user interface since the mouse.

Truer words were never spoken as the wild success of the iPhone attests.

Although the first-generation iPhone was unveiled in January 2007, it started shipping only on June 29 of that year.

We went to New York City on the morning of June 28, 2007, about 36 hours before the launch of the iPhone, to check out the action. And there was already a long line of Apple fans outside the company’s 5th Ave. store (see picture below) along with media representatives from several countries.

Apple Fans Standing in Line for First Gen iPhoneJune 28, 2007 – Eager Fans Lined Up to Buy the First
Generation iPhone at Apple’s 5th Ave Store in NYC

Fast forward five years to 2012.

Five iterations of the iPhone have rolled out so far, each one a stupendous success.

Tens of millions of iPhones have been sold over the last five years and in survey after survey users have given the iPhone higher scores over all other smartphone platforms including Android, RIM and Windows.

The current generation iPhone 4S debuted a few months back with the new Siri personal voice assistant feature.

iPhone – Good Times Continue

The naysayers can say what they will but the good times will continue to roll for the Apple iPhone.

A survey of 4,000 American consumers found iPhone owners were far more satisfied with their mobile phones than owners of any other smartphone.

Samsung and HTC tied for the second place.

Smart Phones Satisfaction Rating

Even querulous people like us who tend to find fault with everything are mostly satisfied with our previous generation iPhone, i.e. iPhone 4.

Hey, it’s just not the past we’re talking about here.

Potential smartphone customers too seem more inclined to buy the iPhone than any other device.

If there’s one thing Bollywood’s flop king and Abhishek Bachchan is used to, it’s failure.

Some Indian movie stars like Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan (at least, lately) and Aamir Khan have the Midas Touch and set the box office registers ringing.

Au contraire, Abhishek Bachchan has the Jonah’s touch.

Surely, Abhishek’s movie distributors and Bollywood fans must be cowering in fear each time this fella has a release.

Players – A Disaster

Reports coming from India suggest that Players, Abhishek’s newest crapshow has been roundly rejected by audiences.

The movie opened badly on Friday and continued its lackluster showing on the following days.

Dubbing Players “a colossal disappointment,” IndiaFM aka Bollywood Hungama wrote:

The film started on a slow note on Friday, declined on Saturday, but showed marginal increase on Sunday. However, the jump in the business wasn’t substantial enough on Sunday.

Other box office observers in India wrote in a similar vein.

Box Office India did not mince words:

The film will be a huge loser and the year is off to a very bad start.

Box Office India estimated Players’ collection at Rs 4.60 crore net on Friday, Rs 4.50 crore net on Saturday and Rs 5.50-5.75 crore net on Sunday.

Box office numbers for the U.S. are not available yet. But we’d be surprised shocked should the movie do well here.

Directed by Abbas-Mustan, Players was a big budget movie that took the film’s crew to India, Russia, Amsterdam and New Zealand.

Of course, Abhishek’s defenders could well say that the failure of a movie is not exclusively his fault.

But shouldn’t Abhishek read the script before accepting the role and, of course, he’s solely responsible for the horrible acting he routinely delivers in one Bollywood movie after another.

Abhishek Bachchan – India’s Most Worthless Actor?

We find it hard to believe there’s an actor in the Indian sub-continent worse than Abhishek Bachchan.

In movie after movie, Abhishek shows himself utterly incapable of emoting.

It’s sheer agony to behold this bloke going through the motions and contortions of acting.

Surely, the only reason this embarrassment of an actor still gets roles is because of his last name.

His father Amitabh Bachchan has been a mainstay of the Indian movie industry for over four decades.

Abhishek’s mother Jaya Bachchan too is a highly respected actress although she rarely faces the camera these days.

Alas, if Abhishek has worked hard at anything in life it’s to disprove the law of inherited characteristics.

Even after over four dozen films, Abhishek on screen is a horror show and has seemingly shown little inclination to hone his acting skills.

Youngsters like Ranbir Kapoor or Ranveer Singh have entered Bollywood much later and have already stolen several marches over Abhishek through sheer dint of hard work.
