Most of our readers would not be able to locate Albania, Armenia, Bulgaria, Montenegro or Malta on the map.

Yet, these countries will soon get Apple’s new iPhone 4S.

But India, Incredible India draws a blank.

India is clearly not on Apple’s list of priority countries for product launches.

Be it the latest model iPhone or the newest iPad tablet, India always seems to come last for Apple.

Is it because historically Apple products have never had a big market in India.

Well, we can’t imagine Albania and Bulgaria and Armenia being big markets either.

IPhone 4S Comes to Albania & Armenia but Not India

On November 11, iPhone 4S will make landfall in Albania, Armenia, Bulgaria, El Salvador, Greece, Guatemala, Hong Kong, Malta, Montenegro, New Zealand, Panama, Poland, Portugal, Romania and South Korea taking to 44 the number of countries where Apple’s hot new phone will be available.

By the end of this year, Apple expects to offer the iPhone 4S in over 70 countries. It’s not known if India will be one of those countries.

The first reviews of the iPhone 4S are out.

And predictably enough, the reviewers can’t stop gushing about Apple’s newest phone.

New York Times:

This phone comes dangerously close to displacing a $200 point-and-shoot digital camera.

….It’s even more amazing how Siri’s responses can actually form a conversation. Once, I tried saying, “Make an appointment with Patrick for Thursday at 3.” Siri responded, “Note that you already have an all-day appointment about ‘Boston Trip’ for this Thursday. Shall I schedule this anyway?” Unbelievable.

Siri can perform an incredible range of tasks. She can get stock prices, weather, currency and price conversions, dictionary definitions, measurement conversions, math totals. She lets you use your voice to edit or check the Clock, Calendar, Notes and Address Book apps, the new Reminders app and the renamed Music (formerly iPod) app. She can read your text messages to you — and let you respond, all by voice (big news for drivers). She uses GPS to know where you are, so you can say things like, “Remind me to pick up the dry cleaning when I leave work” — and she’ll do it.

….over all, Apple has done an excellent job.

Wall Street Journal:

Sometimes, as we all know, looks can be deceiving. While Apple’s latest iPhone doesn’t look different, and may not be the kind of blockbuster people expect from the late Steve Jobs’s company, it thinks different, to quote one of Apple’s old ad slogans. Inside its familiar-looking body there lurks a nascent artificial-intelligence system that has to be tried to be believed.

….My advice is that owners of the iPhone 4 needn’t rush to upgrade; they can get the new operating system. But owners of older iPhone models, or those with basic phones, will find this latest iPhone a pleasure and a good value.

Guardian:

Siri is the USP of the 4S, it is essentially Voice Control that really works. You talk to it, it talks back.

….Once again Apple is taking a lead and asking a lot of its competitors. I wish those competitors luck.

Techcrunch:

The iPhone 4 was a great product. The best smartphone ever made. Now it cedes that title to the iPhone 4S.

Playing the sadist to its Android, Blackberry and other smartphone rivals, Apple today launched the iPhone 4S at a hall-filled event in Cupertino, California.

The upgrade to the world’s favorite smartphone comes with a faster dual-core processor, a voice-based intelligent assistant Siri and an 8-megapixel camera.

The new phone runs on the Apple A5 chip, the same processor powering the company’s market-leading iPad 2 tablet.

Apple Launches iPhone 4S

Key Features of iPhone 4S

* Supports both GSM and CDMA phone standards making life easier for international travelers

* 8-Megapixel camera with a new custom lens, a larger f/2.4 aperture and an advanced hybrid IR filter that produce sharper and brighter images.

* Can intelligently switch between two antennas to send and receive.

* Supports download speed with HSDPA of up to 14.4 Mbps

* Voice-based Siri ‘Intelligent Assistant’ to make phone calls, sends messages, schedules meetings, sets reminders, and more.

* Battery life of up to 8 hours of 3G talk time.

* 1080p HD resolution video recording

* 3.5-inch multi-touch screen and Retina Display

* Includes iOS 5 mobile operating system with over 200 new features; and iCloud free cloud services to automatically and wirelessly store customer content in iCloud and push it to all their devices.

* Facetime video calling service to other iPhone users

iPhone 4S will ship on October 14 in the U.S., Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan and the UK.

No word on availability dates for India but Apple plans to make the iPhone 4S available in 70 countries with 100 carriers by the end of this year.

Besides AT&T and Verizon, Sprint will also be offering the iPhone 4S.

Not Worth Upgrading for iPhone 4 Users

While the iPhone 4S has compelling features that could cause more misery to Apple’s Android and Blackberry rivals, it’s not that attractive if you already have the iPhone 4.

Since SI has already has the iPhone 4, it’s unlikely we’ll upgrade.

In any case, iOS 5 software will be available on October 12 as a free software update via iTunes 10.5 for iPhone 4 users.

But if you’re on the iPhone 3G or 3GS or heaven forbid one of those crappy non-iPhone devices, SI recommends that you drop everything you’re doing, rush out to the nearest Apple store and get yourself an iPhone 4S.

With the launch of iPhone 4S, the iPhone 4 will be available for $99 and iPhone 3GS for free with a two year contract. Now, if that’s not bad news for Android and Blackberry smartphones we don’t know what is.

History of the Most Popular Phone – Apple iPhone

It was less than five years back that history was made.

The exact date was January 9, 2007.

Until that moment, no one ever thought a phone could be sexy.

After all, in the pre-iPhone era a mobile phone was just a device for talking or texting. Or playing a rudimentary game while you were standing in line at the grocery store or waiting for your train at the subway station.

Nothing more, nothing less.

Phone gets a Personality

But Steve Jobs and his company Apple changed everything.

Steve announced the iPhone on January 9, 2007 and gave a personality to the mobile phone.

A mobile phone was no longer merely a phone but an iPhone combining a mobile phone, an entertainment device and an Internet gadget in a sleek casing with a touchscreen.

A phone suddenly became a cool, sexy, a must-have gadget.

You could talk, you could listen to music and you could watch video.

Digital Nirvana was here, right in your hand.

In malls, in subways, on the train, the haves were now swiping their phones to the great envy of the non-haves.

E-mails sent from the iPhone now had the following line automatically appended – Sent from my iPhone.

iPhone is a revolutionary and magical product that is literally five years ahead of any other mobile phone. We are all born with the ultimate pointing device—our fingers—and iPhone uses them to create the most revolutionary user interface since the mouse. – Apple CEO Steve Jobs
