We’re starting a new section that’ll explore the byways and gullies of the English language to cull out interesting words, their origins and usage.

Let’s get started with Martinet.

Our Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary (11th edition) defines Martinet as a strict disciplinarian or a person who stresses a rigid adherence to the details of forms and methods (P.762).

The eponymous word derives from Jean Martinet, a 17th century French army officer (and presumably a hard taskmaster).

Here’s an example:

Contrary to popular perception, I am not the owner of SI; au contraire, I labor for the martinet owner of the blog.

Well, it seems the outsourcing scumbags at IBM are at it again.

What else – preparing to lay off more American workers and replace them with cheaper Indian workers.

The cuts are coming in IBM’s global business services unit, the company’s largest group by revenue and employment, according to a report in today’s Wall Street Journal.

Yes, IBM CEO Sam Palmisano made $21 million in 2008. Go figure.

When even hugely profitable companies like IBM engage in such despicable actions, do you think there’s any hope left for the American IT worker or for this recession to end any time soon. No sir, No.

Big Job Killer
IBM
is one of the biggest job killers in America and by our calculation in October 2008 had some 74,000 employees in India.

Here’s an excerpt from the WSJ story:

International Business Machines Corp. is expected to inform a large number of U.S. employees in its global-business services unit that their jobs are being eliminated, with the work of many of them being transferred to IBM employees in India, Continue reading »

Adult approach?

Oh yeah, we can see all ye priapic desis salivating at the prospect. Yes, from our vantage point we can even see your hands inching down to the zipper and ……

Well, if you think we’re going to be titillating you about 38D, how-to-increase-your length or Sports Illustrated bikini babes, sorry buddy, this is not the post.

We’re here to spread the word about All About Words – An Adult Approach to Vocabulary Building.

Over the years, we’ve pored over many English vocabulary books. But we’ve seen nothing like All About Words – An Adult Approach to Vocabulary Building by Maxwell Nurnberg and Morris Rosenblum.

Folks, this is the ne plus ultra of English vocabulary books.

What we like most about All About Words is that this is not kid stuff. Continue reading »

At President Barack Obama’s press conference, which ended a short while ago, an African American reporter (Kevin Chappell of Ebony Magazine) raised the issue of 1 in 50 children in America now being homeless and sleeping under bridges and tents across the country because of the current economic crisis.

That’s a big, big shame.

Here’s how President Obama responded to the subject of rising homelessness in America:

I’m heartbroken that any child in America is homeless. The most impoortant thing that I can do on their behalf is to make sure their parents have a job. That’s why the recovery package set as a first priority how are we going to save or create 3.5 million jobs. How can we prevent layoffs for teachers, police officers. How can we make sure that we are investing in the infrastructure for the future that can put people back to work right away. How do we make sure that when people lose their jobs that unemployment insurance is extended that they can keep their healthcare.

So there are a whole host of steps we’ve done to provide a Continue reading »

India’s Tata Group, yeah the same bozos who went and purchased the Jaguar and Land Rover, now plan to bring their cheap Nano car to American shores.

Nano, or the People’s Car, which launched in India on Monday, is scheduled to hit the U.S. in 2011 or 2012, according to the Financial Times.

The American auto industry is already on life support and the Nano is the last thing Detroit needs. Michigan will soon start looking like Africa or India.

So you think the whackos and idiots are all lined up only on the side of Hinduism or Islam.

Oh, no.

There are plenty of idiots and whackos among the Christians too. Foremost among these Christian idiots is the current Pope himself.

Pope Benedict XVI

The other day, this Islam-baiting Pope Benedict XVI said on his first pontifical trip to Africa, the AIDS-ravaged continent:

[AIDS] cannot be overcome through the distribution of condoms, which even aggravates the problems.

Condoms aggravate AIDS?

Who made this idiot the Pope, we want to know? Continue reading »
