Apple’s iPad, which has had the Tablet field for itself since it debuted six months back, is getting its first real competition with the launch Samsung’s Galaxy Tab.

In what must surely be welcome news to Samsung’s designers, both the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times have given the Galaxy Tab favorable reviews overall.

Here’s Wall Street Journal tech guru Walter Mossberg’s verdict:

I’ve been testing the Tab for a couple of weeks and I like it. It’s a serious alternative to the iPad and one that will be preferred by some folks….The Tab is attractive, versatile and competitively priced, though monthly cell fees can add up. It’s different enough from the iPad, yet good enough, to give consumers a real choice.

But Mossberg, a fan of all things Apple, qualified his review and made it clear he still prefers the iPad for its larger screen size, more iPad applications (40,000), better battery life and higher storage capacity.

The New York Times‘ David Pogue also had nice things to say about the Galaxy Tab:

Samsung sweated the details on this thing. The screen is gorgeous. The touch response is immediate and reliable. The whole thing is superfast and a pleasure to use.

But Pogue also listed a few ‘frustrations’ like not being able to charge the device of a computer’s USB port, the $600 price, most applications being designed for the Android phone and forcing visitors to view mobile versions of popular sites such as NYT, CNBC and Amazon.

By the way, we are not backing away from our stand that at current prices and given the depressed economic climate the Tablet market ain’t taking off no matter the hype.

For all the schmucks who think Indians are the ne plus ultra of weirdos, listen there’s competition for y’all.

A 24-year-old Japanese man went about his suicide in a strange way – by streaming the announcement live on the net and received both encouragement and requests to desist on his plan.

Unfortunately, the man went ahead and killed himself. We live in strange times, indeed.

Here’s an excerpt from the Sydney Morning Herald:

The man began to broadcast images of himself on live streaming service Ustream on Sunday night, announcing his plan to kill himself and discussing his views about life.

After a break, his broadcast resumed early on Tuesday and he hanged himself in his apartment about 5.30am (0730 AEDT), Sankei said.

His broadcast received many messages, with some web users encouraging him to kill himself quickly, while others urged him to desist.

Bollywood star Akshay Kumar a.k.a. Trash King for his unwatchable horror shows has kissed the dust yet again.

Trash King’s Action Replayy has fared horribly at the box office, the U.S. box office that is.

If the fella had any shame, he’d fall on his knees begging pardon for repeatedly torturing Bollywood fans with movies that are insufferably trashy.

As the savants at the SearchIndia.com blog wrote in their review of this piece of crap:

Folks, unless you are convinced that you are not of the homo sapiens race, stay away from this turd-pile a.k.a. Action Replayy. This one certainly is not for humans.

Here’s how Action Replayy fared at the U.S. box office compared to a few prominent Bollywood films:

Sometimes I think my purpose on earth is to put my penis in the vaginas of as many women as I can.  The idea of having sex with the same person for the rest of my life feels like death to me.

What say you schmucks?

Bet y’all chutiyas feel the same too? ;)

A missile the size of the Chrysler building (in NYC) carrying deadly, highly combustible chemicals is hurtling down the track at 70mph toward highly populated areas.

What you gonna do now?

As one of the characters laments:

Too much train traveling too fast.

Blessed by the Lord
Yipee, the Gods finally smiled on us last night and showered us with their bountiful blessings. :)

How so, you curious schmucks want to know, eh?

By providing us entree to a sneak preview of the new Denzel Washington movie Unstoppable that’s scheduled for official release this coming Friday (November 12).

Inspired by true events that happened in 2001 in Ohio, Unstoppable is a riveting movie of two railroad employees Frank Barnes (Denzel Washington) and Will Colson (Chris Pine) who manage to halt a long speeding runaway freight train carrying huge quantities of molten phenol by chasing the unmanned train with their train in reverse.

In reverse?

Yes, that’s right. They are chasing a runaway unmanned train in reverse!

Plenty of Drama
Minutes into the movie, as the unmanned train starts rolling the drama starts and the momentum is retained until almost the very end.

Director Tony Scott deftly alternates shots of the unmanned train with scenes inside the second train manned by Barnes and Colson, the control room where the tense Connie Hooper (Rosario Dawson) is in charge, the media circus, the police outside, evacuation of nearby houses, family members of Barnes and Colson and the reaction of the corporate office to the unfolding disaster barreling down the track.

And of course, the multiple failed attempts to halt the speeding train.

The amalgam of all of these varied, finely executed scenes is to create a composite that builds, ramps up and holds the tension forcing the viewer into an unblinking stare at the screen.

One of the biggest and vexing problems of Indian movies, be they from Bollywood or Kollywood,  is the inability to handle layers, the chronic incapacity to manage complexity, leading inevitably to a uni-dimensional portrait or caricature that turns to be so disappointing to paying viewers.

Coming back to Unstoppable, the photography (aerial shots, side-views, inside the engine cab and below the speeding train pictures) and soundtrack add to the allure of the film.

The tight screenplay is by Mark Bomback.

Restrained Performance
We can’t remember the last time we were so entertained by Denzel Washington.

This is a restrained performance by one of Hollywood’s top actors and an Oscar winner.

Whether in the banter with the rookie conductor Colson (Chris Pine) or as he calmly informs the threatening corporate honcho that he’s already been fired or as he tells Colson how he recounts the day’s events to his late wife or when, fearing imminent death, he informs his two puzzled daughters that he loves them,  it’s a delight to watch Denzel Washington on the screen.

To be fair, Washington’s co-star Chris Pine does a fine job too as the young man weighed down by family problems and facing a challenging ordeal his first day on the job.

If you dolts like your movie to be entertaining, if you putzheads want value for your ticket money, if you dickheads love classy films, then Unstoppable is your cup of tea. The movie is releasing across the U.S. this Friday.

SearchIndia.com strongly recommends Unstoppable.
