After several years of living in America, we most definitely knew our adopted land was a nation of many crazies, whackos, fruitcakes and screwballs.

How else can you explain the popularity of Glenn Beck, Fox News, Cheerleading, Eric Cantor, Baseball, Sarah Palin, Tattoos and the Superbowl.

Come on, which sane person sports a tattoo or jumps up and down jiggling her tits because some big, fat zombies are engaging in another weird act, playing College Football in which you carry the ball and run.

But even we, yes, we, the immensely wise souls at SI never realized the extent of craziness that lurks beneath the Hi, How are You masses here?

A new study has put out the disturbing conclusion that nationally, 44.5 million adults in America aged 18 or older experienced mental illness in 2010. This works out to a rate of 19.7% of the adult population.

Well, this means that every fifth person we see in the U.S. is some kind of nut-job.

No, we’re not making up these ‘crazy’ numbers.

The study was conducted by Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), an agency in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Remind us never to visit Rhode Island because that northeast state had the highest number of crazies at 24.2%.

Maryland had the lowest at 16.7%.

45 MIllion Americans are Mentally Ill

Serious Mental Illness

The study found 10.4 million adults aged 18 or older (4.6% of that population) experienced a serious mental illness in the past year with rates ranging from 3.5% in Hawaii to 7.2% in Rhode Island.

Arkansas, Idaho, Rhode Island, Utah and West Virginia had the highest rates for both serious mental illness and any mental illness.

We definitely believe that the really, really crazies hail from Arkansas.

After all, Bill Clinton hails from Arkansas.

Yeah, the same dickhead who was busy in the Oval House inserting his cigar into Monica Lewinsky’s twat and then shoving it in his mouth or shoving his dick into her mouth, all while he was talking to Senators and Congressmen on the phone on matters of national importance. Or, maybe he was ordering his generals to bomb Bosnia while he torpedoed and unloaded in that bombshell Monica’s mouth. Hell, if that’s not serious mental illness nothing else qualifies for crazy. Steve Jobs, Apple co-founder and the creative force behind several of the company’s most successful products like the iMac, iPod, iPhone and iPad, passed away today.

Steve Jobs Dead

He was 56.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Jobs had been ailing and recently passed the baton to Tim Cook.

Announcing Jobs’ death, Apple said on its web site:

Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor. Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple.

Steve Jobs’ great talent was to offer products that were exceptionally well-designed and a joy to use.

As users of the iPhone, iPod and iPad, we owe a debt and a big ‘Thank You’ to Steve Jobs.

Besides Apple, Steve also co-founded and Pixar Animation Studios, which created some of the finest animated films including Toy Story, A Bug’s Life, Monsters, Inc., Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Cars and Ratatouille. Pixar merged with The Walt Disney Company in 2006.

Steve, we doubt there’ll be another digital media visionary like you!

Steve’s India Connection

Several decades ago, Steve visited India in search of spiritual enlightenment and had his head shaved there. ;)

He was just 19-years-old then.

Here’s an excerpt from Steve’s 1985 interview with Playboy:

I was walking around in the Himalayas and I stumbled onto this thing that turned out to be a religious festival. There was a baba, a holy man, who was the holy man of this particular festival, with his large group of followers. I could smell good food. I hadn’t been fortunate enough to smell good food for a long time, so I wandered up to pay my respects and eat some lunch.

For some reason, this baba, upon seeing me sitting there eating, immediately walked over to me and sat down and burst out laughing. He didn’t speak much English and I spoke a little Hindi, but he tried to carry on a conversation and he was just rolling on the ground with laughter. Then he grabbed my arm and took me up this mountain trail. It was a little funny, because here were hundreds of Indians who had traveled for thousands of miles to hang out with this guy for ten seconds and I stumble in for something to eat and he’s dragging me up this mountain path.

We get to the top of this mountain half an hour later and there’s this little well and pond at the top of this mountain, and he dunks my head in the water and pulls out a razor from his pocket and starts to shave my head. I’m completely stunned. I’m 19 years old, in a foreign country, up in the Himalayas, and here is this bizarre Indian baba who has just dragged me away from the rest of the crowd, shaving my head atop this mountain peak. I’m still not sure why he did it.

Steve also mentioned in a Stanford University commencement speech in 2005 that times were hard during his student days and how he walked 7-miles to the Hare Krishna temple every Sunday night for ‘one good meal a week.’

Steve Jobs’ Famous 2005 Stanford University Address:

Can Apple Thrive After Steve Jobs?

Steve Jobs had such a powerful influence on Apple that one can legitimately ask the question whether the company can thrive after his death.

With his extraordinary passion for delivering first class digital entertainment products that were unmatched in their quality, Steve was nonpareil.

Apple’s current portfolio is so strong that it’s unlikely the company will pass through any hiccups for at least the next couple of years.

The big question is what happens when the allure and glitter of Apple’s current hot products like the iPhone and iPad start to fade?

Will Apple be able to come out with other products that can capture the imagination of tens of millions of consumers the way the iPod, iPhone and iPad have done?

Well, the jury is out on that big question.

The new comScore marketshare numbers for smartphone platforms are out.

And Google’s Android platform has increased its market share to nearly 44% for the three months ending August 31.

Some 84.5 million people in the U.S. owned smartphones, up 10% from the preceding three month period.

How long before every mobile phone in the U.S. is a smartphone. Given that older iPhone models are now going for $99 (iPhone 4) and older models like iPhone 3GS are free, we should see an uptick in smartphone adoption.

As per comScore, Apple strengthened its #2 position, growing 0.7 percentage points to 27.3% of the smartphone market.

Struggling Canadian company RIM (Blackberry) came in third with 19.7%, followed by Microsoft (5.7%) and Symbian with a tiny 1.8%.

Holy Cow!

Break the coconuts, sound the Tabla, play the harmonium.

Sing that Badwa-Randi song Chamak Challo. ;)

Yea, three NYC Indian restaurants have won the coveted Michelin star.

The 2012 Michelin Guide for New York City restaurants has added Tulsi, Junoon and Tamarind Tribeca to its prestigious list.

Each of the Indian restaurants won a single star. Still a big event.

By the way, a single star means A very good restaurant in its category.

Last year, not a single Indian restaurant made it to Michelin’s starred list.

In the 2012 Michelin NYC guide, of the thousands of restaurants in NYC a mere seven won the highest 3-stars, nine restaurants scored 2-stars and 46 got 1-star.

NYC Indian Michelin Stars

Here’s a brief profile of each of the NYC Indian Restaurant stars:

* Tamarind Tribeca – NYC restaurateur Avtar Walia’s newest creation, the 10,000 square feet two-level, 175-seat Tamarind Tribeca is located at 99 Hudson Street.

The restaurant won two-stars from New York Times’ Sam Sifton last year.

Here’s an excerpt from Sifton’s review:

In London, where marvelous Indian food is as much a part of the culinary landscape as French restaurants or steakhouses are here, Tamarind Tribeca might rate a pleasant shrug. But in Manhattan, it is shaping up to be the best thing to happen to Indian food since Hemant Mathur and Suvir Saran opened Devi in 2004.

The menu is more extensive than at Tamarind’s Flatiron branch. Under the direction of Peter Beck, the restaurant’s executive chef, it sprawls: cooking from Punjab, Goa, Hyderabad, Madras, Calcutta and Lucknow are all represented.

* Junoon – Located at 271 W.24th St, Junoon is the brainchild of NYC restaurateur Rajesh Bhardwaj.

Vikas Khanna is the Executive Chef.

In March, Sifton gave Junoon two stars.

* Tulsi – The creation of Hemant Mathur, Tulsi at 211 East 46th St has won mostly favorable reviews from food critics.

Mathur is a veteran on the NYC Indian restaurant scene and previously cooked at Dévi, Amma, Tamarind and Diwan Grill.

The NYT gave Tulsi a single star in March.

Playing the sadist to its Android, Blackberry and other smartphone rivals, Apple today launched the iPhone 4S at a hall-filled event in Cupertino, California.

The upgrade to the world’s favorite smartphone comes with a faster dual-core processor, a voice-based intelligent assistant Siri and an 8-megapixel camera.

The new phone runs on the Apple A5 chip, the same processor powering the company’s market-leading iPad 2 tablet.

Apple Launches iPhone 4S

Key Features of iPhone 4S

* Supports both GSM and CDMA phone standards making life easier for international travelers

* Facetime video calling service to other iPhone users

iPhone 4S will ship on October 14 in the U.S., Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan and the UK.

No word on availability dates for India but Apple plans to make the iPhone 4S available in 70 countries with 100 carriers by the end of this year.

Besides AT&T and Verizon, Sprint will also be offering the iPhone 4S.

Not Worth Upgrading for iPhone 4 Users

While the iPhone 4S has compelling features that could cause more misery to Apple’s Android and Blackberry rivals, it’s not that attractive if you already have the iPhone 4.

Since SI has already has the iPhone 4, it’s unlikely we’ll upgrade.

In any case, iOS 5 software will be available on October 12 as a free software update via iTunes 10.5 for iPhone 4 users.

But if you’re on the iPhone 3G or 3GS or heaven forbid one of those crappy non-iPhone devices, SI recommends that you drop everything you’re doing, rush out to the nearest Apple store and get yourself an iPhone 4S.

With the launch of iPhone 4S, the iPhone 4 will be available for $99 and iPhone 3GS for free with a two year contract. Now, if that’s not bad news for Android and Blackberry smartphones we don’t know what is.
