Steve Jobs, Apple co-founder and the creative force behind several of the company’s most successful products like the iMac, iPod, iPhone and iPad, passed away today.

Steve Jobs Dead

He was 56.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Jobs had been ailing and recently passed the baton to Tim Cook.

Announcing Jobs’ death, Apple said on its web site:

Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor. Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple.

Steve Jobs’ great talent was to offer products that were exceptionally well-designed and a joy to use.

As users of the iPhone, iPod and iPad, we owe a debt and a big ‘Thank You’ to Steve Jobs.

Besides Apple, Steve also co-founded and Pixar Animation Studios, which created some of the finest animated films including Toy Story, A Bug’s Life, Monsters, Inc., Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Cars and Ratatouille. Pixar merged with The Walt Disney Company in 2006.

Steve, we doubt there’ll be another digital media visionary like you!

Steve’s India Connection

Several decades ago, Steve visited India in search of spiritual enlightenment and had his head shaved there. ;)

He was just 19-years-old then.

Here’s an excerpt from Steve’s 1985 interview with Playboy:

I was walking around in the Himalayas and I stumbled onto this thing that turned out to be a religious festival. There was a baba, a holy man, who was the holy man of this particular festival, with his large group of followers. I could smell good food. I hadn’t been fortunate enough to smell good food for a long time, so I wandered up to pay my respects and eat some lunch.

For some reason, this baba, upon seeing me sitting there eating, immediately walked over to me and sat down and burst out laughing. He didn’t speak much English and I spoke a little Hindi, but he tried to carry on a conversation and he was just rolling on the ground with laughter. Then he grabbed my arm and took me up this mountain trail. It was a little funny, because here were hundreds of Indians who had traveled for thousands of miles to hang out with this guy for ten seconds and I stumble in for something to eat and he’s dragging me up this mountain path.

We get to the top of this mountain half an hour later and there’s this little well and pond at the top of this mountain, and he dunks my head in the water and pulls out a razor from his pocket and starts to shave my head. I’m completely stunned. I’m 19 years old, in a foreign country, up in the Himalayas, and here is this bizarre Indian baba who has just dragged me away from the rest of the crowd, shaving my head atop this mountain peak. I’m still not sure why he did it.

Steve also mentioned in a Stanford University commencement speech in 2005 that times were hard during his student days and how he walked 7-miles to the Hare Krishna temple every Sunday night for ‘one good meal a week.’

Steve Jobs’ Famous 2005 Stanford University Address:

Can Apple Thrive After Steve Jobs?

Steve Jobs had such a powerful influence on Apple that one can legitimately ask the question whether the company can thrive after his death.

With his extraordinary passion for delivering first class digital entertainment products that were unmatched in their quality, Steve was nonpareil.

Apple’s current portfolio is so strong that it’s unlikely the company will pass through any hiccups for at least the next couple of years.

The big question is what happens when the allure and glitter of Apple’s current hot products like the iPhone and iPad start to fade?

Will Apple be able to come out with other products that can capture the imagination of tens of millions of consumers the way the iPod, iPhone and iPad have done?

Well, the jury is out on that big question.

Steve Jobs Resigns as Apple CEOFriends, Schmucks and Über-Schmucks, the world as we all have known it for decades is ending.

Darkness has descended on the planet.

It’s with a heavy heart that we bring you the sorry news that the Messiah I-Messiah of Digital America aka Steve Jobs has stepped down as CEO of Apple, the company he co-founded over three decades back.

No, this is not a rumor. Head for the nearest shelter before the Android beasts can get you.

Steve Jobs – Greatest Achievement

Steve Jobs’ greatest achievement is that he single handedly prevented the American people from rising in revolt against their oppressive, moronic, and occasionally sexual depraved rulers by keeping them preoccupied with his iMac, iPod, iPhone, iPad, iTunes and I-whatnot devices.

Steve Jobs along with Steve Wozniak, founded Apple in 1976. Except for a brief period when John Sculley booted him out of his own company, Jobs has been guiding the destiny of one of the world’s most successful companies.

You don’t believe Apple is one of the most successful companies in the world? Then explain to us how Apple has $75 billion in the bank. Hello, we’re waiting for your explanation.

Jobs was elected Chairman of Apple’s board today.

As if God needs the halo of a Chairman’s title or the embellishment of a degree (Steve never got a degree).

Is Steve Dying

Apple did not disclose why Steve Job was stepping down.

But the wise souls at SI suspect the man’s dying. Continue reading »

Chuck Ganapathi Joins Accel PartnersMan, Andy Warhol was right with his famous comment that In the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes.

Well, it’s Chuck Ganapathi’s day under the arc-lights today.

The Internet is all atwitter about this fella.

It seems the PSG Tech alumnus, who we were all blissfully unaware about until a short while ago, has joined Silicon Valley venture capital firm Accel Partners as Entrepreneur-in-Residence.

In his new avatar, Ganapathi’s mandate will be to evaluate and incubate new business opportunities created by the confluence of social and mobile technologies in the enterprise.

Accel Partners is a prominent VC firm and an early investor in social companies like Facebook and Groupon, mobile companies such as Angry Birds (Rovio) and Admob, and enterprise software and cloud startups such as Cloudera, Couchbase, Fusion-io, Springsource and Atlassian.

Before joining Accel, Ganapathi was Senior VP of Products for Chatter and Mobile at salesforce.com, leading its product development efforts in enterprise social networking. Earlier, he slaved for six years at Siebel Systems, where he was founding product manager of their Internet application Siebel eChannel.

Deven Sharma Out at Standard & Poor'sDeven Sharma, president of tainted credit rating firm Standard & Poor’s, has been out-graded (take that neologism, schmucks).

Sharma, 55, is stepping down as head of the firm effective September 12 but will remain an adviser of the parent company until the end of the year.

The official reason cited for Sharma’s departure is that he “was ready for new challenges.”

But we suspect Standard & Poor’s decision on the leadership change today is the outcome of pressure from the Obama administration.

Citibank’s Chief Operating Officer Douglas Peterson will succeed Sharma as the new president.

Under Fire

Standard & Poor’s has come under fire after it recently downgraded America’s long-term federal debt credit rating to AA+, a notch below the top grade of AAA. Continue reading »

It’s indeed a pity that life is not cricket. If it were, we’d not have seen the festering wounds of an ignorant war.
- Sri Lankan cricket captain Kumar Sangakkara, some 31-minutes into his 2011 MCC Spirit of Cricket Cowdrey Lecture at Lord’s on July 4, 2011

We’ve always known, and indeed written on the SI blog, that Kumar Sangakkara was not merely a fine cricket player but an extraordinarily eloquent one as well.

In his 2011 MCC Spirit of Cricket Cowdrey Lecture at Lords on July 4, Sangakkara showed what a fine wordsmith he is in a remarkable address on the subject Spirit of Sri Lankan Cricket.

Sangakkara delivered a scintillating summary of the story of Sri Lankan cricket deftly weaving the history of the game in the island nation with the country’s colonial history, politics, civil war, victory, defeat, corruption and political interference. Continue reading »

balance my bills till my departure next weekend.

Can you please lend me a sum of 2600euros [approximately $3500 us dollars]
or any amount you can afford to lend me? I will refund you back upon my

amount you can afford, kindly email me back so that I can forward you the
details required for the transfer the money via the western union money

In or around January 2010, Ms.Bhardwaj’s husband in India needed an operation, and her children needed money to pay for it. Ms.Bhardwaj decided to ask defendant Prabhu Dayal for the money he said he was holding for her.

Ms.Bhardwaj asked for the money three times in one day, and he twice said they would talk later. On that day, Defendant Chandini Dayal was in India and Defendant Akansha Dayal was out of the house. That evening Ms.Bhardwaj made her third request for the money when Defendant Prabhu Dayal was seated in the living room. Defendant Prabhu Dayal said he would give her some work to do in order to get the money. He told her she would have to give him a massage for pain in his legs.

A lawsuit filed on June 20, 2011 in New York City charges Indian Consul General Prabhu Dayal with sexual harassment for demanding a massage from his maid-servant Santosh Bhardwaj.

In her complaint filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, the maid alleges that in January 2010 her employer Prabhu Dayal asked her for a massage when his wife was in India and daughter was out of the house.

The maid says that she immediately left the room and subsequently left her employer.

The complaint also alleges that Dayal did not pay Santosh Bhardwaj her promised wages, overtime wages and confiscated her passport.

In the suit, the maid alleges she was paid less than a dollar an hour in violation of state and federal employment laws. She is seeking unpaid wages, overtime wages and punitive damages.
