Once Upon a Time in Mumbai U.K. BO – No Takers for Ajay Devgn, Emran Hashmi

Ajay Devgn is a nonentity in Bollywood unless he has the presence of other strong players alongside him (like for instance Ranbhir Kapoor et al).

Say, look at the below table and tell us if Ajay Devgn matters at all:

Once Upon a Time in Mumbai

Don’t jump the gun on movie being a hit.

Could be a close-call, according to BoxOfficeIndia.

    Here’s an excerpt from BoxOfficeIndia:

    Q. Will Once Upon A Time In Mumbai cover its costs?

    A. It will be close call but weekdays will decide. The film has an investment of around 38 crore (28 production, 10 publicity and advertising). 10 crore has come from satellite, Overseas (2 cr), Music (2cr) and Home Video (2cr) should add 6 crore leaving 22 cr to be made from India theatrical. With adding distributor commission a share of 23 crore plus will see the makers in the money.

Once again you are ignoring the fact that the revenue generated is dependent on the number of theaters it was released. Here the film was released in 23 theaters as opposed to 91 for MNIK or 54 for Housefull. Also the movie is based on the Mumbai underworld of the 70s. Not exactly a family draw. Its very difficult to guesstimate overall performance based on BO numbers from the UK where the top 5 movies in your list reek of bad acting.

Generally speaking, if a Hindi movie releases in fewer theaters it can be interpreted as a sign of lack of confidence.

Plus in this case, the average per theater of £2382 is also not impressive.

Took a quick look…HT, Apunka and Rediff (above) seem to talking weekend numbers.

    BoxofficeIndia (above) says:

The film is a success and second weekend will decide if it goes on to be an outright hit.

Since Ajay and Emran are in the B/C category of stars, the movie might not have cost much and there is the possibility that it could make a modest profit.

But don’t uncork the champagne yet. 😉
