Kuruvi Review – Nonstop Nonsense

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Karunanidhi’s grandson Udhayanidhi Stalin has delivered a Sakkada Panni (dirty pig) of a movie in his maiden production Kuruvi.

Vijay and bathroom video fame starlet Trisha assisted by Ashish Vidyarthi and Suman come together in this horrendous nightmare called Kuruvi to deliver nonstop nonsense from the first frame to the last.

Kuruvi has much going against it – the story is not remotely credible, music is intolerable, the acting is unbearable, action scenes unendurable and overall the movie is just insufferable.

Kuruvi’s story – if you dare call this garbage a story – is an act of breathtaking inanity.

A venal politician Konda Reddy (Ashish Vidyarthi) has found diamonds beneath government land in Cuddapah and seeks to exploit that for personal gain with a bunch of poor laborers that he has forced into virtual slavery and beats and kills brutally with an ugly posse of henchmen led by a cartoon called Cuddapah Raja who stubs his cigarettes on the palms of young boys.

Hello, will someone please tell Kuruvi’s director Dharani that this is the 21st century. Involuntary servitude and slavery in movies are so 20th centuryish and went out of fashion decades ago. Che, che.

Konda Reddy’s partner in crime is his friend Kocha (Suman), an Indian gangster based in Malaysia and the elder brother of a young girl Devi (Trisha), who is not keen on getting married to a comical mini-thug called Suri with a chronic inability to shoot straight.

And Vijay is Vel, son of a contractor Singamuthu (Manivannan), who is one of the many men that the villain Konda Reddy has kept under his unyielding yoke in a quarry.

Cheap Laughs

Tamil movie directors – and presumably fans too – do not consider a film complete without either Vivek or Vadivelu to provide some cheap, vulgar laughs.

So you have Vivek in Kuruvi, playing Vijay’s sidekick. But Vivek fails to provide much joy or even those cheap laughs in Kuruvi because much of the dialogs here are so bizarrely banal.

Dharani – Key Culprit

Dharani, who directed Vijay’s successful 2004 film Ghilli, is the architect of the badly-made Kuruvi.

Kuruvi is such an idiotic movie that in one scene toward the end when Vijay is in the midst of fighting Konda Reddy’s goons, director Dharani suddenly introduces a song-dance scene of Vijay-Trisha. And what is worse – Mozha Mozhannu is one of the worst song-dance scenes we have seen in recent memory with the music pathetic and the dance disgusting.

In Kuruvi, there are just no limits to director Dharani’s nonsense, be it in the music, story, dialog, stunts or dances.

Besides directing Kuruvi, Dharani also takes credit for the story and screenplay.

Thank God, Dharani didn’t also act. Guess, we’ve to be thankful for small mercies in Tamil movies these days.

Vijay – Repetitive

In another boring and repetitive feature in Vijay’s movies, he is again introduced as a sportsman in Kuruvi too (In Ghilli, Vijay was a Kabbadi player, in Azhagiya Tamil Magan, an athlete and in Kuruvi, a car race driver driving a jalopy!).

Kuruvi is Vijay’s second lousy movie in the last six months – his last movie Azhagiya Tamil Magan should have been more aptly titled Asingamana Tamil Magan. His latest movie Kuruvi should more appropriately be called K*&thi.

Both Vijay and Trisha do a mediocre job in Kuruvi.

While expectations from Trisha are always extremely low, Vijay sinks to a new low in Kuruvi. If you thought Vijay was bad in Azhagiya Tamil Magan, he’s worse in Kuruvi. Whether in fight scenes or the song-dance scenes, Vijay displays none of that fire and verve in Kuruvi that he so nicely brought to the screen in Pokiri.

Trisha – Plain Awful

As for that non-actress and gangrenous appendix on the body of Kollywood a.k.a. Trisha, we can only say that whoever unleashed this bimbo on the big screen must have a wholesale sadistic temperament.

Why torture in retail when you can easily torture millions in wholesale by just casting Trisha in a movie?

Devoid of any grace, wholly lacking in acting skills and missing a pretty face, how this bathroom video fame horror show Trisha manages to survive in Kollywood is a mystery known only to Muruga.

While Trisha is bad in virtually every Kuruvi frame she appears in, she sets a new low with her awful performance in the Then, Then song-dance sequence. You can daub all the lipstick and makeup on a pig but at the end of the day it is still a pig. Right?

Whoever designed Trisha’s hideous costumes must have previously worked only with quadrupeds (four-legged creatures) in a circus because the actress looks terrible in most of the dresses she wears in Kuruvi.

Overacting Villains

Cast as screaming neanderthals lording over a bunch of clownish, criminal underlings, Ashish Vidyarthi and Suman utterly fail to terrify but totally succeed in irritating the audience with their crude overacting.

Like the rest of this piece of garbage, Kuruvi’s music is devoid of any merit. While none of the songs are impressive, Dandaana Darna (in the beginnning) and Mozha Mozhannu (toward the end of this nightmare) are plain horrible because of their terrible picturization.

And the action scenes in Kuruvi – disgustingly bad! The picture of a small-built Vijay simultaneously fighting a bunch of better-built, better-equipped goons is not for weak eyes. When Vel takes on Cuddapah Raja toward the end of Kuruvi, the fight scene hits a new nadir in the annals of Tamil movies.

Some parts of Kuruvi were filmed in Malaysia but it may have well been filmed in a public toilet for all the good it did.

Kuruvi Rating – Nonstop Nonsense

With their bad trifecta of unimaginative stories, mediocre acting and lousy music, most Tamil films are caught in a time warp that is extremely frustrating for movie fans.

All in all, Kuruvi is an egregious offense against all notions of taste, decency and entertainment.

If you plan on missing just one Tamil movie this year, this worthless piece of crap called Kuruvi is the movie to avoid at all costs.

P.S: Paying $13 for a ticket to watch Kuruvi at that stinking Movie City theater on Oak Tree Road in Edison (New Jersey) is a total ripoff. Why can’t Tamil movie exhibitors in the U.S. screen movies in better theaters, say Regal or AMC, like the Bollywood distributors/exhibitors?

I happened to pass through the road where the theatre that released K****I in Chennai. what i’ve seen is most embarassing thing, tell u what, the fanatics are having a charriot and placed this guy’s(vijay) photo and they march on the road with Gypsy Dancers with crackers… bull shit. they caused a traffic jam and lot of troubles to public. i was thinking to myself when this morons are going to have a life.. what say u..?

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

What a disgrace! Traffic delays occur in the U.S. because of accidents or construction activity not because of some K*&thi movies. Thank heavens, Matt Damon, Will Smith, Brangelina, Julia Roberts etc don’t have such moronic fans here.

wat the hell man …… this is not a apt review
you having a [trash talk] website
you nonsense editor …… you are a [trash talk] nonsense first watch the movie observe audience and then write your review ok

    [trash talk]
    KURUVI ROCKS

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

Kuruvi is a piece of trash. At Movie City in Edison (New Jersey), people were frequently walking out of the movie hall, particularly during the song scenes. When we watched Pokiri, there was total silence because the audience was engaged with the movie. But with Kuruvi, there was a fair bit of chitchat in the hall suggesting the audience was not that engaged with the movie.

Pokiri was a fine Pongal (2007) treat to Tamil movie fans. Kuruvi is sheer agony for Tamil movie fans.

    • dontilak   April 6, 2011 at 4:08 am

i agree kuruvi gave me nightmares….but how the hell did you like pokiri….wasnt it like any other kollywood masala film?? with shitty comedy, physics defying fights?? and btw review nadunisi naygal too….

      SearchIndia.com Responds:

You write: but how the hell did you like pokiri.

Truth be said, that question has been giving us nightmares. We’ve asked ourselves a million times how we could like that fourth-rate shit.

Think of that review as a rare misstep in our evolution to greatness. 😉

Please go throught the above link for your comment in your review…(Hello, will someone please tell Kuruvi’s director Dharani that this is the 21st century. Involuntary servitude and slavery in movies are so 20th centuryish and went out of fashion decades ago. Che, che)
I don’t mind whatever view you have on the movie..but please be updated before posting anything relevant to social happenings….

    Searchindia.com Responds:

Sure, think of any social ills – child labor, child marriage, Sati, bonded labor etc – and you’ll find India to be a fertile breeding ground. We do not dispute it.

As we clearly said in our Kuruvi review, Involuntary servitude and slavery in movies are so 20th centuryish and went out of fashion decades ago. The operative word in the previous sentence is in movies.

We are referring to the idea of slavery and involuntary servitude in movies (used to be common in 20th century exploitative Zamindar films in Tamil, Hindi etc) not in real life.

We made that point clearly but it seems to have escaped your attention.

We enjoyed Vijay in Pokiri and to some extent in Ghilli too. But Kuruvi is total garbage.

We have serious doubts that Kuruvi will resonate with the audience except maybe with some die-hard Vijay fans.

  10. sandheep   May 5, 2008 at 10:24 am

    Hai,

This is not a single movie it is a mixture of a dozen movies. This movie is created by copying English Hindi and Telugu movies. This is not fair for Gilli Director!

  11. apple   May 5, 2008 at 11:15 am

hey if u don like vijay its ur personal matter…but can v call this jealousy..may b the movie is not good according to u..but there is a way in expressing it..when this website is viewed by may cant u maintain atleast that manners?

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

We neither dislike Vijay nor are we in love with Vijay. We enjoyed Pokiri and to some extent Ghilli too.

Trashy films like Kuruvi, Azhagiya Tamil Magan and Indiralogathil Na Azhagappan show the contempt that Tamil actors, producers and directors have for Tamil movie fans.

Do you have the gumption to ask Vijay, Dharani or Udayanidhi why they have delivered such a crappy movie?

  12. gr8one   May 5, 2008 at 9:35 pm

Nice review. That cracked me up =))
But then even this movie will run for 100 days in Chennai B / C Centres.

For people who said that the person who wrote the review does not like Vijay, you’ve gotta see that he has also appreciated Vijay’s performance in Pokiri .. “Vijay displays none of that fire and verve in Kuruvi that he so nicely brought to the screen in Pokiri.”

If you ask me even Pokiri was not as good as Athadu…

  13. jpcomments   May 6, 2008 at 1:57 am

The movie is full of comercial. The first half comedy and second half only action.Second half more scenes copied in telugu movie chatrapathi. Songs all not bad. Really very good dance moments of first intro song(dharna) & climax song(yamma yamma). Vijay proved again his dance moments, and also did a very good job for dance master prem rakshith after ATM (ella pugazum). Vijay can do some leg moments, audience all noticed that prem rakshith only choreographed this song.
Totally this movie is a average summer entertainment.

  14. keyar   May 6, 2008 at 6:05 am

Wow… its really a great review. There is one more girl who was upset with the movie, just now I read her blog in indiashines

  15. stealthunt   May 6, 2008 at 9:26 am

Please learn how to write a review. When I was going through it I understand that it is not worth the 13$ you spent and is definitely avoidable. But making personal comments like “bathroom video fame starlet Trisha” or “Asingamana Tamil Magan” doesn’t really gel well on a review. Using heavy duty words like venal or banal (when corrupt or boring would’ve been more than sufficient). Good reviews dont exceed 500 words and especially a bad movie shouldn’t have beyond 250 words. Your review for Kuruvi (esp since the movie is so bad) should’ve got the least attention.

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

OK, Grandma. Next time we write a review, we’ll send it to you for editing!

100% correct brother. i wasted getting ticket for 120rs in block at chennai. movie is worthless..unbearable..
i didn’t expect this from dharani who gave ghilli, dhool, etc.guys.. pls dont waste ur valuable money..

  18. seceye   May 7, 2008 at 5:47 am

Whoever you are bro I would like to tell you one thing. You are a guy who has got this thing between your ears working. I’m more of fan than a critic.

But Frankly dat three hour or so was utter tormentation. It was hopeless and i could see most of the guys shouting and giving out loud comments on the spot.

Nxt time pls do a scene by scene review. On the other hand those dumb actors dont deserve so much of our valuable time. Anyway awesome comment. Looking for more.

And for the people who wanna spend time in the loo pls go ahead and do so without bothering to inform us. heheheh

  19. lkvijay   May 7, 2008 at 6:34 am

You comments really took my breath away!!! None couldn’t make me stop laughing on seeing your comments! Asingamana Tamizh Magan was actually bullshit. People badly controlled crashing the screens on throwing something furiously. There is a limit for people patience….am sure the screen is gonna bash now. I loved your saying, pig is always a pig. It is really pity to see the audience on watching the so called white pig along with the so called black bull. Finally, people must set an imagination to watch the 5 sense creatures acting and dancing on the silver screens. I really puked out, on seeing the costumes of the bathroom video famed gal Trisha. Vijay also competes Trisha on wearing trenched costumes… Overall, KURUVI – the cute little bird has got its fame being botch up because of this K*&thi

Very Nice Review…Looks like it came straight from the heart…By the way, why is it that there are reviews for only a few movies. For example, why have movies such as Anjadhey not been reviewed. It will be good if you can review good movies as well.

Most Americans (White, Black & Latino) are outwardly polite.

We have encountered overt racism on a few occasions.

But we have also seen Indians treating Blacks badly.

You are the best reviewer of them all. I cannot believe that humans in this day and age can possibly create something this dastardly and call it cinema. There is no sanity in the tamil film industry. Its being run by idiots who have more money than sense. This film has made recent ‘captian’s releases art classics. There should be a law to prosecute directors and producers who subject viewers to this kind of mental agony. Hats off to such a honest review.

The creature does not have feminity and basic looks. She gets chances in movies by [trash talk]. What a fate to cinema?. Beware [deleted].

Wow, Its an excellent review I ‘ve ever read. I watch’d the movie in online. I couldn’t even digest the fact the dharani had made a worst movie in his lifetime. You know what Vijay father did – he gave money to some guys to get a big opening for him like doing the charriot with his foto. They advertise themselves that’s Vijay. GOD HELP TAMIL FAN”S FROM THIS ONE TIME SEX HERO – ILLAYA THALAPATHY VIJAY. Now he is not willing to act with sanghavi who gave him life.

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

Do you think Vijay is trying for a hat-trick?

    Azhagiya Tamil Magan was lousy.

    Kuruvi was a disaster.

All Vijay needs now is just one more bad movie for a hat-trick.

  31. joeantony   May 17, 2008 at 7:32 am

I want to tell one important thing here.. Vijay has fabulous talents.. and millions love him in tamil nadu.. even my mother is a great fan of him… every kid loves him.. Though he has given may crap movies before also.. but still he could maintain his popularity.. but continously giving crap will definitely pull him down… Your review was good /appropriate except the bad words that were used..
the kuthu songs in his movie has double meaning and most of the kids love to humm them and as a mass hero he should take the responsibility for delivering poor content to the people who love him… Its high time that vijay should take a break and have a long breather and plan his career… Rajini was a mass hero too.. but none of his films were nonsense.. the may be illogical.. but he never delivered poor content .. double meaning jokes or songs or vulgur dance moves were never there… vijay should learn it.. and he is the only man who could reach the level of superstar.. but if he continous like this .. he will become super comedian only….

  32. soriram   May 22, 2008 at 11:10 pm

worst entertainer… if you find time read on..

  33. Venky   May 24, 2008 at 11:38 am

The review is absolutely spot on. The movie lacks credibility in all aspects. It was a 2.5 hours of pure torture – may be our Intelligence agencies can add this to their torture measures.. and believe me, they will have a huge success rate…

I was astounded by the scene where the “Illaya Thalapathi” crosses the road flying through an autorickshaw. Alas, he could have waited for 2 seconds and happily crossed the road without a hastle.

It is sad that Kollywood is churning a lot of these Sh**ty movies. Movies like Autograph, Santosh Subramanian have become a rare commodity.

We as audience should reject and dismiss this movie summarily and send out a strong message to the group that we cannot be taken for a ride.

I just saw scenes from the film (In T.V. shows). The ones intended to make us laugh seemed to be stupid. Trisha’s costumes too suck to the core.

Kuruvi is not a movie. It’s an awful nightmare.

    this k*&thi celebrated 150 days victory…
    enna koduma…

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

What was the logic for the celebration given that the movie hardly seemed like a mega-hit?

Th movie goers are to pitied being trapped amidst some gret movie directors who have no idea of the immense torture they undergo. Hitlers concentration camp is far better.

Kuruvi of course. Kudos. They have set a model for other directors also villu. How not to make a movie.. Learn from these movies.

It takes immense courage to act in these movies .. so cheers to Vijay and co..
